By collect-a-thon; I mean a game where you spend more time running around finding stuff and collecting random things than actually having fun and doing cool stuff.
For me, it was Donkey Kong 64. Rare had always made collecting stuff a part of the games, but it was usually done in a way that you'd find most stuff while just playing through the level, and a few more tries would get you everything you needed to finish the game.
Banjo-Kazooie was a good example; lots of stuff to find (puzzle pieces, notes, those colorful guys), but you could unlock most of the game without finding everything, and the difficulty slowly amped up through the game.
Jer Force Gemini was good except for finding those damn Tribals (you had to play each level AT LEAST 3 times in order to do this) - I never did save them all so I never beat the game. But what I did unlock was fun, and it was still an enjoyable game.
But Donkey Kong (which came out like 3 weeks later, I think) was too much. You had 5 different characters. Each character had 5 Golden Bananas that only they could get. Each one had a different color blue print to grab. Plus each character had specific bananas and coins. And on top of that; you gotta play the original Donkey Kong and Jetpac multiple times to unlock 2 more coins. It was insanely tedious, and I think I finally got frustrated and quit with something like 45% of the game actually unlocked.
As a kid, I had unlimited patience for games, but DK64 broke me.

Donkey Kong 64, for sure. I already kind of disliked Rare's approach to 3D platformers with Banjo-Kazooie; I actually never really got the love for this game. Even as a kid I thought it was too much of a collect-a-thon and just not very fun. But I'd take Banjo-Kazooie a million times over Donkey Kong 64. What an abysmally-paced, boring ass game that was. Level design was bad, WAYYY too much mandatory collecting, and the only real positive about it is that the mechanics worked pretty well.

Assassin's Creed has several different big things they want you to collect, while being surprisingly light on the actual ability to assassinate.

Let's all pile on Donkey Kong 64, which had:
Golden Bananas, bananas, blueprints, crystal coconuts, camera film, weapon ammo and coins
I replayed it recently and there's fun stuff in it but with five characters all collecting these things it just becomes too much and levels end up taking ages to get through.

Love mass effect but i could not be bothered driving the Mako on every planet to collect bits and pieces, just tedious, espicially as every building as the same design on every planet.

Yeah, I've gotta go for Mass Effect 1, at least if you're trying to 100% it. Also, SCREW ALL Y'ALL DONKEY KONG 64'S A GOOD GAME.

It had some fun stuff for sure - but I remember it as being the first time I said "No way am I gonna waste time to get 100% on this" after years of doing that in every single game. If they would have trimmed down the collecting aspect (lke have special Golden Bananas for each Kong, but everything else can be collected by anyone) I think it would be more fondly remembered. As it is, I honestly wonder how many people even saw the final boss.

Donkey Kong 64, hands down.
At least with the Banjo-Kazooie games, there was a point to it, one that they eventually made fun of. Donkey Kong 64 made it overkill, and to further drive it home, instead of letting the player choose one of the five Kongs find all the stuff that they felt would be best in a situation, they divided levels in which you had to use all five of them to get the stuff. And the chain of command for the items in particular was very annoying.
I just wanted to beat up enemies, not collect items. That was a huge step back, IMO.

The fact that you'd beat the final level and then surprise! you have to get the Rareware coin and the Nintendo coin to fight King K Rool was too much for me as a kid. I could not for the life of me beat the Donkey Kong arcade game, so I gave up for years.

Donkey Kong 64 was a Collect-a-thon but I still think there's bigger problems with the game. Oddly enough I think DK64 is my number 1 game when it comes to problems I have with it but would still recommend playing it.

Arkham City: Riddler can shove his trophies up his *insert extremely long, profane rant* Another good call out. Fun as hell game, tons to do - but I'll never ever get all the Riddler Trophies. I once had a weekend I devoted solely to getting trophies since I had around 50 left after beating the game. I gave up after 10; I could not get those last few.

That is why I am so glad ME2 used planet scanning and probes. Sure it was boring too, but it went by a LOT quicker.

GTA 4 with those pigeons. I wanted to 100% the game and achievements but after getting frustrated with trying to locate them, I watched a walkthrough and screw that crap...

The Riddler Trophies is a good one, not only for requiring them to get to the awesome puzzle portions, but because it requires such an insane suspension of disbelief. You want me to believe that the Riddler somehow got into every single base, including the headquarters of the League of Assassins, to plant trophies and create riddles around them? Almost none of the villains like each other in this continuity, but everyone is just fine with him? And how did he even get to all of these places in the first place? And why did he decide that Catwoman needed her own?
I could buy it with Arkham Asylum, because it's a really confined space. But for some reason, I just couldn't with Arkham City, even though the payoff to it was much better.

I'm in that small camp of people that actually loved Donkey Kong 64, but it's still the clear winner.

Besides Arkham City for me either some of the sidequests in the Final Fantasy series. For me Seven had some of the most annoying ones to get a gold chocobo.
