If you pick up the original I'll gladly hold your hand until you get your bearings ^_^ As a note on the original, I've been playing a very low-level character just to help the first few bosses, and twice in a row I ran into a summoner who didn't think to let us know Havel was super pissed at him. The first time he pointed at the door, and the first phantom ran in and IMMEDIATELY ate a Dragon's Tooth. The very time I was summoned I was following the player and he went right up stairs, I followed, and just avoided being smashed myself while Havel was hanging out up top. Fun/irritating times. Ah, the problem with me is, chances are... I'll never get my bearings. I just don't seem to get better at games, I start at a certain skill level and remain there forever. Which really doesn't work with a game like Dark Souls. As a noobie to Dark Souls 1, who has been helped greatly by JDeviant, it can seem daunting at first, but the world is fairly linear in its way, and most stuff looks different enough where you do not get turned around. It takes a bit to get used to the design ethic. My issue is that I get distracted so damned easily. And that is when I get killed.

I'll roll over a bunch of enemies and a boss (Skeleton Lords in DkS 2 being a prime example), then move onto the next area think "I can take them easy!" and get destroyed over and over.

Its also really easy to forget that even enemies towards the beginning of these games can kill you once you've gotten so used to mowing them down that I'll do dumb things like rushing into hordes because while I CAN wipe them all out, it doesn't mean I will. That and being cocky about running on cliff edges.

That and being cocky about running on cliff edges. Two words: "Torch hollows" Started NG+7 in the first Dark Souls, just beaten the Asylum Demon, full health in full Ornstein Gear at Level 230-something, then one of them jumps out, uses the "freak out and flail with a torch" attack and killed me. I felt soooooo stupid. Oh, and best thing about the Skeleton Lords? They had Bonewheel Skeletons, which made my heart drop, but they're much fairer this time around. I remember getting killed so much in the Painted World sewers because of those horrible things.

And you found my aforementioned reference to easiest boss thus far~! And there's actually another boss easier than them.

If I'm honest, I had a harder time with that than I did the Skeletons, but it was because I got cocky and he rolled over me <___< I've heard he'll sometimes grab you, swallow your gear, then spit you back out, which could be embarrassing! The Skeletons though, I'd read they were weak to fire, so I used some Resin, charged in, took two hits a piece to kill them. Probably took me longer to kill the mobs that spawned after they died!

Naw, the Undead Congregation. I made it to them with half my health and no estus flasks handy. I was being reckless. I thought I'd just attack them a bit to see what they do and then come back to beat them a second time. Except they were really easy and I managed to kill them all. I think it'd only be hard if you got cornered.

Just finished it moments ago. Great game. It's hard to decide which was better Dark Souls or Dark Souls 2.
I particularly loved the tension in the Dark Souls 2 before you got a certain couple of items that made all of the glorious punishments pretty much toothless. Then the game became just like Dark Souls with slightly less predictable farming.
A lot of great boss battles--only a few were unreasonably cheap. If my Bonfire Aesthetic has taught me anything, though--they only get cheaper in NG+

So it has just come to my attention that a lot of people think the Shrine of Amana is the hardest area in the game...
WTF.
Please tell me I'm not the only person who thought it was easy as pie? I'm not acting like I'm a god at the game or anything, but people are acting like it's the hardest area in the game when it's one of the easiest.
Is there some play style that makes it very hard or something?

I haven't got there yet (haven't played in about a week or so), but I hear a lot of people who are complaining are melee centric, so have no counter to the dudes slinging soul arrows because you can't roll in the water. So by the sounds of things, I'm gonna need to grab a decent bow before I head in!

I have no idea why somebody wouldn't have a bow ready. The bow is single handedly the most useful item in the game for sniping alone. The same was true for Dark Souls.
I always carry one and I am pretty much pure melee.

I've been using the same one for ages, but I'm seeing decreasing returns so I'll be switching soon. I remember in Demons Souls, the White Bow was actually my main weapon by the end of the game, it made most of the bosses stupidly easy.
In other news, finally beat the Lost Sinner! Got back on after a week off, decided I should get it done, so I slapped on my new Cloranthy Ring (Which was a huge boon), summoned some guy who was using the red eye ring (Which drew aggro away from me) managed to get it down to one tiny sliver of life when him and Lucatiel both died, then in, what I must say was an awesome moment for me, parried one of her attacks and was able to slice her and kill her!
Pretty pleased with myself now! No idea where to go, but pleased! Gonna try the Iron Keep and see where that gets me.

Let's assume I have never played Dark souls 1 and I have picked up Dark Souls 2, what handy tips would you guys recommend to do at the start? I am currently at an area with big green/grey knight giants, which I don't think is too far in.
I do not have a bow or magic. My character choice was knight.

If you have a shield block and strafe to the giant's right--which would be your left--I think. This may be reverse. A lot of his attacks will miss. Hit him when he misses. The number 1 rule of fighting in Dark Souls--per my experience--is thus: Don't be greedy. If it takes a while to kill something, then let it take a while. Also: Only fight one on one when possible. (It's almost always possible)

Been playing this off and on recently. Really made some progress though, about to head to Drangleic Castle. Using the Black Knight Halberd at the moment, infused it with fire and been two handing it, made short work of most of the bosses. Also got a Lightning Zweihander as my back up (It was a good idea in the first game!), a Poison Red Rust Sword and Ricard's Rapier with bleed, because the heavy attack with the multiple stabs builds it up really quickly if you can land it, so you do a huge chunk of damage.
