Watching the InVasion PPV ALONE, that guy was getting monster pops for every little thing he did. IIRC, they ruined it right? Turned him heel and joined the Alliance as a "mole" or some stupid crap.

The milk truck incident to me will always be far more epic than the beer truck incident.

Not only did he turn heel as the mole inside the Alliance, but he STAYED a heel the next night, despite being the man responsible for saving the WWF by being said mole in the first place.
2001 was such a horrible year.

Angle as a heel after Survivor Series is the only lame thing that actually bothers me about 2001. He was mad over and was taken as such a serious threat that even Steve Austin was running scared of him.
He'd never again be as popular.

Yeah WWE turning him back heel again was so typical but I suppose they had HHH penciled in as the hot returning babyface so...
I loved Angle as a face, its so weird in retrospect thinking about that period when the main event feud was RVD vs heel Austin vs face Angle.

Him staying heel after revealing he was lying about being in the alliance all along and saving team WWF was always baffling to me.

With some people, revisionist history says Angle was only really over post 9/11. That logic is dead wrong. Angle was as white hot a face as they'd had in a long time. They totally blew it with him

The milk truck incident to me will always be far more epic than the beer truck incident. I only found out recently that the milk was fake milk.....so bizarre that they made that choice

Quite honestly, I've never been so emotionally involved in a wrestler as I was towards Kurt Angle that summer of 2001.

I loved Angle's 2001 face run. Helped give his character some credibility as well (especially considering the month prior he was doing those goofy, albiet incredibly funny, skits with Austin and McMahon).

It still irks me that they had a really big chance to make him the next big "American hero" in the WWF, but they blew that big time.

I agree with every one of you. I LOVED his 2001 face run. why they would turn him heel (and stick him into the midcard after nWo & HHH arrived) after doing great work, being really over and being a great talented hardworking American hero AFTER FREAKING NINE ELEVEN I'll never understand. one of the many reasons I hate HHH and HHH politics

They should have ran with him as THE guy. Still can't believe they blew it so badly.

As much as the Invasion angle was botched, I'd say the quality of PPVs in 2001 was amongst the best standard I've seen in a calendar year. Specifically, Austin & Angle were pure gold whenever you put them in the ring together that year.

Angle/Austin is actually one of my favorite feuds ever. Fantastic chemistry in the ring and you really felt like they despised one another.

Him staying heel after revealing he was lying about being in the alliance all along and saving team WWF was always baffling to me. Well they needed to make McMahon the big evil owner again (apparently) so they needed Angle to be at his side since it sure wasn't going to be Austin. I'm not disappointed by that turn of events, but rather fascinated that their demented logic worked out in the funky backasswards way it did....
