In terms of intervals between great and absolute shit I'm not sure if anyone beats Jonah Hill. Just look at some of these examples.
*He starred in arguably the shittiest animated series on a major network in history and the same year earned his first Academy Award nomination with Moneyball.
*He capped 2011 off with a minor box office bomb in The Sitter then followed it up with The Wildly Successful 21 Jump Street only to next appear in The Watch, a film that barely made it's budget back.
*Hill followed up a small part in the utter flop that was Strange Wilderness with a small part in Horton Hears a Who, which grossed nearly $300 million.
Probably plenty of more examples out there for Hill and even more to come!

The first guy that comes to mind for me is John Goodman. So many highlights in his career - The Big Lebowski, Monsters Inc., Argo, Monuments Men, etc. - but just as much garbage - King Ralph, The Babe, The Flintstones, Blues Brothers 2000, etc.

Cuba Gooding Jr? I mean he won an Oscar then pretty much immediately started starring in nothing but crap

John Travolta
Because he had two shots at fame, and screwed it up twice.

Matthew McConaughey. He'll do crappy movies like the Wedding Planner and Failure to Launch and do an amazing job in the Lincoln Lawyer to make up for it.

Keanu Reeves. It seems that he gets back in the public eye and follows it up with a flop. I'm still waiting for him to have a hit and follow it up with The Contrabulous Fabtraption of Professor Horatio Hufnagel.

Chevy Chase. He was the breakout star of the early SNL era while doing movies like Caddyshack, National Lampoons Vacation, Fletch, Three Amigos and then ruin his career with Cops and Robbersons, Nothing But Trouble, The Chevy Chase Show, etc.
Bill Murrary. does the Garfield movies and makes up for it with his Wes Anderson work.

Johnny Depp. From Edward Scissorhands, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Rango to Pirates of the Caribbean 3 and 4, Dark Shadows, and Lone Ranger.

Depending who you ask he they might not agree that he made up for it with his Wes Anderson work Though he does get passes for pretty much the rest of his body of work...

Stallone during period of the late 90s to mid 00s as he pretty much had to go running back to both Rocky and Rambo despite years before saying he was tried of both roles.

I enjoyed Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, and Moonrise Kingdom. Lost in Translation still holds up I have never seen them... other than a bit of Moonrise Kingdom (I think it was that one) and didn't really like it though it was a random couple of scenes in the middle so I don't really count that as valid judgement but I do know for a fact that my brother hates like all of Wes Anderson's movies... at least the recent ones he's seen anyway.

Eddie Murphy comes to mind as well, especially in recent years
