I didn't watch Impact and have only seen this thread so I have no idea how it actually played out but f*** yeah at Young being champ. I've been begging for a EY title reign for the longest time.

I think of this as more of giving one of their long time vets a "thank you" more than I think of it as a WWE/Bryan rip off.

I think oof this as more of giving one of their long time vets a "thank you" more than I think of it as a WWE/Bryan rip off. ^This. This is all this is, same as Sabin's run. Magnus will probably win back the title at the PPV and that will be that.

Eric Young is one of the unsung heroes of that company, and I'm happy that he's got that notch on the belt that at one point, he was the TNA World Champion... The timing just works against him bad.

For a company that's always been aware of what other organizations are up to at the same time, I just don't know what they were thinking. Like you said probably is a nice "here you go Eric thanks" moment, but pickybacked on top of what: a) Looking for the comparison to what WWE did just this very weekend and welcoming the controversy (hello Russo) b) Or just so incompetent in their planning and it's similarities to others not realizing how much it would make that "thank you" look like "f*** you eric" to alot of people (not all but many) I lean towards A but that's me

I'll c&p this from the thread I created. I didn't see this one Finally the long decade-long culmination has happened for Eric Young as he wins the World title and is the 4th TNA Grand Slam Champion in the company's history. Now before everyone piles on the LOLRIPOFF stuff, the ONLY similarity Young has with Bryan is a large beard and he had 2 matches in one night, neither of which did Bryan "create". EY is not ripping off his theme, chant, mannerisms, or anything of the sort. Hell, Magnus isn't even with an Authority stable anymore. He's buddies with Abyss and that's it. Young has been in so many shitty storylines for TNA over his career and it's refreshing to see him be rewarded for his loyalty and hard work for the company, even if it might be for a couple weeks. So congrats on winning the big one Eric Young, you definitely deserve it! I feel you onbeing happy for him being rewarded for his hard work and talent, but I just wish it would've been a better story. It happened over the course of like 3 weeks. It's too bad that his big title win feels like yet another shitty storyline. I do see a ton of parallels with the WWE stuff too, too much for it to be all coincidence.

Hell up until last week Eric Young was a bumbling idiot that the whole reason he was even mentioned in the title was an association with Abyss because he spent 18 months convincing Joseph Parks he was Abyss, yes 18 months doing this when it could have been done in 3 months. Plus Joe has a legitimate point he was never beaten clean and should still have chance, Eric Young was also involved in that Fatal Fourway last week he was the one pinned. It is badly timed and Eric Young literally was a figment of the title picture, I do wonder where Aeries has gone. Even after winning the title they didn't even let the moment sink in they just faded to black. Again Magnus failed. EY kicked out after a low blow and hit a piledriver to win. Magnus was even booked as an incompetent champion, Bobby Roode would have been a better heel Corporate Champion, he can cut promos and knows how to sell psychology in the ring. I do think its cool that he won but it should have happened sooner

Ya know, I remember when Goldberg started building momentum how people were screaming he was a Stone Cold ripoff. Well, bald, goatee, black trunks, yes.... but really, he stood on his own two feet. The closest similarity was Brock Lesnar and he didn't arrive until well after WCW folded. So yeah, on the one hand, there are a lot of coincidences.
On the other.... Wrestlemania was Sunday. If this had occurred later this year, the exact same series of events, I could see it going over a little better. If, by then, Bryan's reign has been "screwed up" there'd be the idea that they could "get it right." Whatever.... but there is just a sense that, not only have we seen this before... we literally just got done watching it.

They could do much worse than EY as far as TNA champs, but it's way too early for TNA to be pulling this without people snickering.

The fact that they did it so quickly makes it mean a lot less, and that means it will be booked without any care. Magnus has been an awful champ, don't take it off of him just to put it right back in 2 weeks. At least Bully was a good champ who's reign still had some juice.

See, if they would of had the match at Sacrifice and EY gives it a hell of a good showing, but ends up on the losing end, only to get over and get a push for down the line for when it mattered, like 6 months down the road, sure...I would actually give them props.
Not tonight. This is TNA at it's finest.

I only watch TNA on occasion but... hasn't the majority of Eric Young's career (outside of the World Elite stuff) been pretty much one step above comedy jobber?
I mean I like the guy but he's always seemed to be treated as at absolute best a lower mid-card comedy act.
That doesn't mean he couldn't have been built up to be the champion... but this really does seem like it came out of nowhere especially since he was slumming it with Joseph Park's goofy sidekick up until like what a month ago?
This doesn't really make Eric Young look good... it kinda makes Magnus and the TNA Belt look pretty bad IMO....

Up until Lockdown he was a comedy act like Santino and like I mentioned he wasn't even in the title picture until about 3 weeks ago when he got tired of Joe saying he wasn't pinned clean challenged Joe and lost yet MVP still decided to put him, Joe, Magnus, and Abyss in a four way last week and EY ate the pin last week after Magnus told Abyss to back off and let him pin Eric so Eric lost clean in a fatal fourway than wins a 10 man gauntlet match and then challenges for the title in the same night. Plus he was Joseph Park and ODB's goofy sidekick

The main problem is while EY does deserve a run with the TNA title due to longevity in the company and amount of bullshit he put up with, he has been booked as a comedy wrestler who couldn't hang with the big boys. Samoa Joe merced him in less than 5 minutes a couple weeks ago. Abyss treated him like a prostitute and sent him to the hospital. He didn't get any victories that gave him credibility before tonight. His match booking tonight was way too close to what when seen just a couple of days ago. EY hurts his arm and wins a shot against Magnus. He wrestles 2 matches in one night. Magnus, who been the worst booked TNA World champion since Fail Sabin, cannot put him away after trying every dirty tactic and move in his arsenal. EY pins him clean with a piledriver mercifully killing Magnus' terrible reign but creating scrutiny because his win mirrors Daniel Bryan's minus the long journey to get there and satisfaction of the victory. If TNA's long term plan was making EY champion, they should had planned it better. Unexpected doesn't mean great.

I love EY but this was so f*** bad, I actually pity him. They straight f***ing ripped off Wrestlemania 4 days after. There was no change to the formula at all. Even if you want to ignore the other parallels that this could have, they used the exact same formula as Mania: Open the show with an against the odds shocking win that leaves the winner injured and then in the main event they fighting spirit out of everything before the shocking win. You can say "Well everything in wrestling is a rip off of something" all you want but you don't f***ing do it just 4 days after the largest company in the world makes it the focal point of the biggest damn wrestling show of the year.
Christ TNA, just f***ing hell.

Between Chris Sabin, Magnus (booked worse than perhaps any heel champion I have ever seen), and Eric Young all holding the TNA World Heavyweight Championship in the last 12 months, I am reminded of a promo The Rock cut in 2001 during the Invasion:
"The Rock knows damn well the history of the WCW title - the Rock knows that the title traces back to Frank Gotch, Lou Thesz, Ricky Steamboat, and WOOOO Ric Flair! And the Rock also knows damn well what in recent years the WCW title has come to...Diamond Dallas Page, Booker T, the guy from Scream 2, the dog from Married with Children, the maid from the Jeffersons, Shane McMahon, this WCW title is just like your sister - everybody gets...a turn. ..."
