Was there anyone else really disappointed by this? After getting Hogan & Savage and Warrior was gone from WWF at the time I thought sure it was him. After that I just thought of WCW as Busch league. The NWO briefly sparked my interest but I was still a WWF guy after that.

First time I ever saw The Renegade, he was losing to Scott Hall.
I did't know he was supposed to be a big deal.

First time I ever saw The Renegade, he was losing to Scott Hall. I did't know he was supposed to be a big deal. In 1995 he was initially treated as a big deal, but that didn't last long at all. I think Bischoff and Hogan thought they could easily talk Warrior into coming to WCW, and when they couldn't they made their own (especially since a lot of wrestlers didn't believe Warrior had talent and anybody could do his role). Warrior also said in his old shoot that he felt the Renegade was a ploy to try to get him to WCW to set up a feud between the 2.

I remember the buildup WCW gave for the Renegade. It was around the time WCW was hiring just about every former WWF wrestler to a contract. The word going around the sheets and scuttlebutt was the Ultimate Warrior was coming to WCW. So when Hogan started to hype for the next ppv that he was bringing in the Ultimate Surprise, almost everyone assumed it was going to be the Warrior. Even on the live Main Event, him and Jimmy Hart did a vignette with a shadowy figure in the background doing Warrior poses and built like him. So during the match with Hogan, out comes the Renegade who for 3 seconds looked like Warrior before the ruse was exposed. The crowd booed him because they were promised the Warrior and got a cover band version. WCW continued to try passing him off as the real deal until the fan revolting made them kill his push. From there, it was teaming with Joe Gomez before his untimely demise.

I remember feeling angry when he won the TV title from Arn Anderson, and tremendous joy when DDP won it from him.

The better question is was there anyone NOT really disappointed by this?

The better question is was there anyone NOT really disappointed by this? Yeah this is the most blatant use of bait and switch in wrestling I can think of. Show a guy in silhouette doing Warriah poses... keep referring to him as the ULTIMATE Surprise... and it's an Ultimate Warrior impersonator... maybe it could have worked if he was a heel... but Fake Razor and Diesel kind of make that just as unlikely. Speaking of was it known if they ever actually tried to sign Warrior at this point?

And they had to pick an extremely generic name ('Renegade') for him too. Why the hell did they choose THAT name? Doesn't it essentially mean 'turncoat'?
Were they trying to imply that he was turning his back on WWF?

Vince Russo would have suggested calling him Ron A. Gade

I'm disappointed that he didn't ride a motorcycle and try to keep law and order on the wild streets of America's Highways.

Didn't The Renegade come out to pretty much a complete ripoff of Warrior's music too?

Might as well have called him 'Mr. X'.

Wasn't he already doing the Warrior knock-off stuff on the Independent circuit?

I always felt for sorry for the guy. He did the best he could in an absolutely no win situation. WCW essentially threw him to the wolves

So if there were 4 Ultimate Warriors how many people played the Renegade? And did one of the Ultimate Warriors play the Renegade?
