Watching Wrestlemania 9 and it just brought back how cool the evil version of Doink The Clown was, that music and his psychology was really cool. Its one gimmick that can be reused over and over with different wrestlers. They have brought back cheesy Doink many times over the years for nostalgia purposes, but what if they brought back the sick and twisted version for a more modernized run? With characters like Bray Wyatt around, it would be interesting IMO, even if only for a short run for him to be unmasked as a new character. Yep just a random Sunday morning thought.

I too was thinking this after watching the "Infamous Gimmicks" ep. of Countdown. Totally could work. Could even explain the different wrestlers with the whole "You don't know how many Doinks there really are" line back in the day.

I've been saying for years that this gimmick has tons of potential, but WWE have never used it.
Around the time The Dark Knight came out, they should have reintroduced Doink as a darker, grungey character. Not a comedy gimmick, but an evil mastermind.
It's a ready made gimmick for someone. It's crazy not to use it. Give the guy a faction and it'd be over like crazy.
If I was an NXT up and comer, I'd ask WWE for that character.

The only thing is, because it was such an individual gimmick, it'd be hard to have another wrestling clown. They've even had a couple of chances to do something similar and mucked it up with Phantasio and Kizarny, the kind of freak show crazy heel.
When you have that kind of connection, with the crowds these days, it'd need to be very special so it didn't get something like the Tensai/Albert mocking and not be taken seriously.

With Matt Borne's death - and its announcement on WWE.com as "Doink the Clown Dies" - they can never bring Doink back now, either at all or in the dark/sinister way we'd like. I think Wyatt's the closest we'll get to that kind of character. And really, the whole "Reality Era" thing to me seems like characters such as Doink are verboten in any non-nostalgic manner anymore. Around the time The Dark Knight came out, they should have reintroduced Doink as a darker, grungey character. Not a comedy gimmick, but an evil mastermind. IIRC, Borne actually did do this on his own at a couple indy shows around then...

Speaking of which, how come they've never done a Pennywise gimmick?

I would have loved to see Knuckles Madsen in his "Knuckles The Clown" gimmick on NXT:

Chris Jericho's 84th return! Break the Clown Down! They never should've made Jericho Doink.

I wouldn't mind, as long as he wasn't a straight-up Joker ripoff.
I can't believe I (of all people) am saying this, but I almost wouldn't mind seeing them try a batshit insane _face_ clown gimmick.
Jeff Hardy would have made it work. He was already 90% of the way there.

Evil clown gimmick would only work under the right wrestler. The original Doink worked because Matt Borne was perfect for that role. He really captured a dark, ominous presence to it. The entrance theme was the cherry on top. I don't think it's possible to replicate it, although it would have been amazing to see someone try to do something similar to Heath Ledger's interpretation before the Dark Knight came out in '08 with the smeared makeup and Glasgow smile and darker colors.

I would like Ambrose a lot better if he was working a crazy clown gimmick. His over the top mannerisms are a perfect fit.

Before anybody knocks it just because it happened in TNA, I just want to say Sting was awesome during his Joker Sting period. I also love how stealing the personas of cool characters from movies is his unofficial gimmick.
