It would be Dean Ambrose... as a wrestling clown. He's got the skill to do it, but damn if that wouldn't kill his career. I doubt it. Outlandish characters are part of the business. Being a wrestling zombie didn't hurt the Undertaker. Being a wrestling Elvis worked fine for the Honky Tonk Man. Being wrestling Elvis's didn't work for Greg Valentine, Jimmy Yang, sonny siaki, and the other guy. Also failed gimmicks can ruin good wrestlers for instance being a rooster pretty much killed Terry Taylor's career...

Evil clown gimmick would only work under the right wrestler. The original Doink worked because Matt Borne was perfect for that role. He really captured a dark, ominous presence to it. The entrance theme was the cherry on top. I don't think it's possible to replicate it, although it would have been amazing to see someone try to do something similar to Heath Ledger's interpretation before the Dark Knight came out in '08 with the smeared makeup and Glasgow smile and darker colors. Right before he died and dude STILL had it...So awesome

The "evil mastermind clown" is hardly comparable. It's arguably the most effective comic book villain persona in history. No reason why it couldn't work in wrestling. Personally I'd prefer a newcomer to get it, and keep Ambrose as part of SHIELD, but there's nothing inherently damaging about such a gimmick As for Valentine, he was more like a wrestling Roy Orbison, or at least that was my interpretation, and he was fine. It didn't cause any damage to his career. He was already teaming with Honky Tonk Man for a while before he dyed his hair black. No drastic change there. I don't know enough about Sonny Siaki to comment on him, and wasn't Jimmy Wang Yang or whatever his name was a redneck? He was an Elvis too? I didn't see that. It won't work for everyone, but no gimmick does.

Did anyone else mention that back in the Attitude Era, when they split the Headbangers so Mosh could become you know who, there were rumors of Thrasher doing an evil clown/ICP type gimmick?

Or they are speculating on what characters Ambrose can play if the SHIELD runs its course. It would be Dean Ambrose... as a wrestling clown. He's got the skill to do it, but damn if that wouldn't kill his career. Turning Husky Harris into a crazy, singing, hillbilly cult leader is going to ruin his career!

And I think a crazy clown gimmick is a perfect fit for Ambrose. His comical mannerisms and way of speaking don't fit a Swat gear wearing, mercenary type character. I think it's something he'd probably like to play too since so it's no secret Ledger's Joker is an inspiration.

Matt Borne died? When did this happen?

Actually, I think a lot of his schtick (including the facial expressions) are straight from the Roddy Piper school of wrestling.
I mean when he was Moxley he definitely was influenced by Joker but I don't think it's as blatant now.

I think Dean Ambrose is certainly a future world champion. Deaoik the Clown would put an end to that instantly.

Piper is one of my all time favorites and I don't remember him making comical facial gestures like Ambrose does. Like the way he stuck his tongue out when Kane chokeslammed him. He's a live cartoon. His promos are a far cry from matching Piper's believable intensity (Keep in mind I'm talking about Piper at his peak; early to mid 80s). Ambrose does what Wyatt does. Spouts a bunch of almost stream of consciousness rambling that goes on too long and has no consistency in the delivery. It's all over the place. They remind me more of Warrior than Piper. I don't see Ambrose as a future world champion either. There's at least five guys that have never been champ that I can see getting it before him. When Shield breaks up, I think he's going to need a gimmick to set him apart. Reigns is the muscle, Rollins is the risk taker. What is Ambrose?

Heel Doink the Clown is probably the greatest wrestling character ever. Wouldn't mind bringing it back. Dean Ambrose as Doink.
