wrong guy for the gimmick, too. there are few guys who can pull off the all-american beloved superhero gimmick to begin with, and Lex sure wasn't one of them. the Narcissist was the perfect gimmick for the guy, and they threw it away to turn him into Hogan-lite and pull him out of his element.

Luger's delivery was nowhere near Hogan's neither inside or outside of the ring. Hogan would sell a match in a promo along the lines of
"oh yeah brother, I heard what the big dude had to say but as I cruised into the arena this morning, as I flexed my 24 inch pythons, as they glistened in the bright morning sun, I saw the look the the eyes of all my little Hulksters, brother..."
Whereas Luger would say something like "I'm going to beat you."
It's all in the selling.

Hogan had alredy beaten virtually everyone in the AWA and it was a formality to put the title on him. Vince got him and was like "Thanks, Verne!" WWF didn't have any other top face that was a clear alternative to Hogan, especially with Backlund losing all steam by late 1983. I guess they could have gone with Snuka but after all the questions about his girlfriend's death there was no chance Vince was putting the title on Snuka.
I always thought that if Hogan had stayed in the AWA, then Plan B was Sgt. Slaughter. He began to turn face right after Hogan won the title.

Ten Year old me back in '93 - "Hang on, isn't this the same obnoxious prick who ogles at himself in front of multiple life sized sparkly mirrors and who has been knocking out cold all of my favourite wrestlers recently". So why would I want to suddenly cheer for Luger?

Did they even explain how he went from jerking off to his own reflection to wrapped in the flag?

Also it needs build up for fans to care. His 1990 / 91 face run I felt was flat because there was no build up. Sting hurt his knee and had to get surgery and someone had to pick up the slack as the top face anf Luger had to quickly turn face. His 1988 / 89 face run was good because there was built. Post Starrcade 87 we saw the build up beginning with JJ and the other horsemen taking cheep shots at him, we saw something was coming, and when he threw JJ over the top rope in the battle royals the fans erupted.
Heck only few fans saw his face turn as it happened. Most of us had to wait the day after Raw and find out through higlights of the body slam challenge, it just wasn't the same as seeing it as happening, even in a taped show they try what they can to make it seem live.

Did they even explain how he went from jerking off to his own reflection to wrapped in the flag? I figure that Luger was at home and the phone rang. Luger then picked it up said "Yes, this is the Narcissist....oh hello Mr President....what's that? Yokozuna is on an aircraft carrier?....why?......No can slam him?.....He says Americans are weak?......how dare he!!!.....I feel my sense of national pride rising.....alright never fear......I'm on my way!!!"

Obviously at the time Lex was Flexing in front of like 5 mirrors at the time

Nothing Luger said made any sense. When he confronted Yokozuna on that ship, he blamed him for America's problems. I'm not sure how a sumo wrestler who had risen to the highest level of the WWF could cause issues like trade deficits, unemployment, failing public schools etc... You just don't understand McMahononomics. And yes Firefox, I'm aware that's not a real word!

I've often wondered why of all times did WWF try to do all this jingoistic crap in 1993? It was post Cold War, there wasn't any real tangible threat, so why did we suddenly get a heel Sumo wrestler, a Finnish villain, and Luger wrapping himself up in the American flag?
I didn't really mind Luger's various heel/face turns in WCW because he at least was more or less a similar guy, but going from a gimmick like the Narcissist to an All American gimmick overnight was just plain weird.
