I realize it's the Internet and there are plenty of Mario Kart therapy groups out there, but seriously, I want to vent. F*** the Blue Shell so much.
Like, I'm honestly pretty genuinely baffled as to why this thing keeps getting into every single Mario Kart, never even slightly nerfed or anything, when it's a very likely contender for the single most hated mechanic in any game. Is it just because without it the AI would be a complete and utter joke?

It's to give the players trailing behind a chance to come back. All "action racing" games like that have a similar feature. It'd be pretty unfair otherwise as the guy who takes the advantage early on has little chance of ever being caught up with.
Seriously, if they removed it, you can bet everyone would beg them to reintroduce it in the next game.

The reason my group hates the blue shell is because you can be in first place and still get murdered and brought back to the rest of the pack.

It's the great equalizer. Just like items in Brawl, it allows newbies and pros to play together without having a hundred Mortal Kombat style Flawless Victories in a row.

The lightning bolt always bugged me more, anyway. I will grant, I'm probably more annoyed by the Terminator levels of obsession the Red Shell has in 7. That thing is just f***ing impossible to ditch in it unless you have something to throw in front of it. |

Does the blue shell still fly ahead and attack 1st place and only 1st place?
The real problem with the blue shell is that it's usually awarded to the person in last place and it doesn't really help them much if at all(unless it's the blue shell that moves along the ground and hits the others.). It only really helps 2nd and 3rd place.

I think I remember hearing they're allowing more item options in the next Mario Kart, maybe that will include some blue shell options.

Sonic and Sega Racing does it much better I feel, though I feel those games are far superior to the Mario Kart games so I may be a tad biased. They use a Star that activates the chosen characters special power, for Banjo giant Jiggies fell out of the sky onto random spots on the track and it was goddamn awesome. It's no guarantee that it'll increase your standing in the match, screw somebody over or even be the reason you won, it just gives you a pretty solid chance of that which makes the entire mechanic much much less frustrating when you are on the receiving end of it. |
