I have to ask this, did anybody else think that his appearance on "The Simpsons" was, I don't know, pointless? I know many celebs have cameos, many of them even play roles in the episodes like Mel Gibson, Alec Baldwin, Ron Howard, etc. However, I remember seeing this a long time ago and I wonder Bret was supposed to appear again later in the episode. The funny thing about this was that the episode aired around the time Bret turned heel and was doing the anti-American angle with The Hart Foundation. Hell, the way he talked in the episode didn't seem like Bret at all. He seemed like a totally different character to me.
Also, I remember thinking that his look was more like his 80s Hart Foundation appearance as his tights didn't have the four hearts on there, nor did the sides say "Hitman," not to mention his glasses were silver as opposed to pink.

I agree, too short for my taste. But it wouldn't be the last time a BIG CELEBRITY CAMEO was only a small part of a Simpsons episode.
Also, when I first watched it, I didn't think it sounded like him. Did he provide the actual voice?

It was a pointless guest role
A sign of things to come.

It was a pretty pointless appearance, but it's Bret Hart and the Simpsons together, so I enjoyed it anyway.

Really, the only reason anyone mentioned it is because WWF Magazine was big on trying to do more "in-depth" stuff with the wrestlers. In one interview, Bret said his favorite show on TV was The Simpsons. So, the natural progression was... if he's a voice, it must be a big deal. If not for the viewers, than for him.
I've always wondered how often those interviews actually are conducted with the wrestlers to any extent, or if they just make up the interviews on the spot like they did for a lot of dirt sheets. Basically it'd be character building from their standpoint, to try and make their faces more relatable so it's possible they'd plunk pop culture of the day and toss it in their "interests" profile at the time so fans would be like, "Holy crap, 1-2-3 Kid likes to play video games? *I* like to play video games! This guy is totally representing ME!"
I guess on the other hand too, Bret was on the show during it's epic run of quality, and it was one of the first time the mainstream had allowed any part of wrestling to grace their vocabulary for quite some time. So even though Bret used his "I'm pissed off and doing a promo voice" and said two things... "Ewwww, this place has got old man stink" and "HAHA! I'll take it!" I guess it could be forgiven that the WWF played it up.
Hell, I even remember a small piece in the magazine where they talked about Freddie Blassie being mentioned in "Man On The Moon" from REM.

This guy is totally representing ME!" From early 1995 (I think it started with Shawn Michaels or Bulldog) to 1997/1998, WWF Magazine would have a section on a certain wrestler and they would have a 20 question-like insert with a poster on the backside. The one they did for Brian Pillman was so crazy that if it really were him, I think we should go back and rethink just how revolutionary the Loose Cannon gimmick was. Because the answers to the 20 questions were so over the top it would make one think it was some loon pretending to be the Loose Cannon character. It probably was sugary WWF magazine writers trying to be "edgy" in a time when WCW and WWF were anything but.

Wasn't it the fact that someone in the Simpsons writer's room knew Bret's manager so when they wrote "wrestler" the guy just went "lets put Bret in there, I know him"

I think in "Wrestling With Shadows," when it shows Bret watching his cameo it cuts to the TV after he says "I'll take it!" and there's more animation with him than what actually aired. I could be misremembering it but I swear there was extra footage in that shot.

Short cameos can work. The George Harrison cameo is one that comes to mind.

He used a weird voice, which threw me off as a kid. I loved the WWF magazine cover with him and Bart though

I wouldn't say pointless, it was just a cameo, but it did seem a bit half hearted. Listening to the commentary from the episode underlines that point.

Pointless or not, was a cool cameo, and his WWF Cover with Bart is Awesome, made Bret look "Hip"

I want to know how Burns got the mansion back from Bret. Bret sexually harassed Smithers and it was part of the settlement.

I still use "Hey-ey, I'll take it!" to this day, usually in regards to a favorable weather forecast on the news. "Sunny and 75 for Easter? Hey-ey, I'll take it!"

Didn't some fan use this episode to rib Dave Meltzer?

If you think Bret got screwed by the size of his role, how do you think The Shrieking Sheik feels?

The reason he sounded like a different character is because he was a different character. When he did the recording it was supposed to be a generic wrestler. It wasn't until long afterward that the producers realized just who they had and changed the character to Bret himself late in production. Source: Bret's book

Didn't some fan use this episode to rib Dave Meltzer? Really funny but it's just Meltzer being Meltzer. The guy doesn't seem to have a single thought that relates to anything other than wrestling and MMA.
