It seems like both Tunney and Dillion were garbage at their job.
Looking at the major evidence against them, Tunney ended up making a bigger mess out of the Survivor Series 91 situation (Flair interfering in the Taker/Hogan match and helping Taker win the WWE Championship, leading to Tunney making a rematch at This Tuesday in Texas) at This Tuesday in Texas by getting involved than if he had just let the match happen without being at ringside (sits at ringside to make sure no shenanigans happen; ends up being knocked out by Flair and Hogan wins by blatant cheating).
Dillon was just a buffoon in his obliviousness to what match Sting wanted in 97. It's was clear as day that Sting wanted Hogan and only Hogan, yet he kept offering him lower card nWo guys and acted baffled when Sting refused. I realize that it was to build interest in the Sting/Hogan match, but watching Dillion and Mean Gene in the ring looking like complete goofs when the crowd was chanting "Hogan" or Sting was pointing at a "Sting wants Hogan" sign made them look like imbeciles.

Hmm, that's actually a fair question to ask, because they both had moments of idiocy, at least in my estimation.
Tunney -"Suspended" Rick Rude for making comments about Big Bossman's mother. (Granted, Rude popped up in WCW a while later, but still.) Dillon: Didn't suspend Nash for continuing to do the banned powerbomb, just fined him.
Just based on those two, Tunney looks like the bigger idiot. We never found out what the comments were, just that they were degrading. For all we know, he pulled a Scott Steiner.

JJ had Nash arrested, so he wasn't quite as ineffectual as Tunney.

Hey Jack Tunney is the most respected president since Grover Cleveland.
Jim Cornette said it so it must be true!

Another strike against Tunney was his back-to-back calls of not allowing a Hogan vs. Warrior rematch because of the physical brutality, then saying he can't do anything about Earthquake because people knew what they were getting into by signing to wrestle him, and that "giving back the same kind of damage" was the only solution.

I thought this was going to be about who was superior in wrestling appearances: Impersonator Clinton or Impersonator Obama.

I forgot all about J.J. Dillon offering Sting less important NWO guys to wrestle. Does anyone remember which NWO guys were offered? I think Brian Adams may have been one.

I know the last two were Curt Hennig and Syxx, after that they did the "Sting wants Hogan" segment where he took a sign and showed it to J.J.

Tunney was the best. Back then authority figures were supposed to be bureaucratic and ineffective, like real authority figures.
Much better than evil kind we've seen since 1997 onwards.

Jack Tunney though Giant Machine might be Giant Baba. He was not a smart man.

Tunney was the best. Back then authority figures were supposed to be bureaucratic and ineffective, like real authority figures. I think John Laurinaitis could have pulled this off. At times, he seemed like he sincerely wanted to do a good job.

Would have made more sense if they played it like Hogan was dodging Sting instead of Dillon being a complete buffoon.

Yeah, the match actually was able to happen because Hogan randomly came out on a Nitro in October and just basically said, "Yeah, I'll fight Sting. Let's sign a contact." Regarding Sting being offered matches with other guys, Bryan Adams was not one of them as he was still in WWE as part of the Nation vs. DOA vs. LB feud at the time. And Hennig was offered prior to him joining the NWO in September.

Bryan Adams was too busy performing "Everything I Do) I Do It for You" live in concert at the time
