I agree with the idea that he needs to ditch the comedy. Cena moves a ton of merch, does a shitload of Make A Wish stuff, and is basically the biggest friend to all children since Gamera. And that's fine. But being a role model to children doesn't mean that Cena needs to act like a literal child. Superman never created dumb Photoshops of Lex Luthor. Goku never made gay jokes about Frieza. Captain America never spraypainted "Red Skull is poopy" on the side of a Panzer tank. no, but in the movie Cap did declare "I've knocked out Hitler over 200 times" when they wondered if he could handle rescuing Bucky on his on. It was awkward, sure, but it was still funny. And Ultimate Spiderman opened a speech to the Kingpin with a series of You're so fat jokes.

Cena's character is basically if you took Spiderman's quips and had Superman recite them, which is why it doesn't work. I learned from the last topic about the subject, though, that you and I just aren't going to agree about Cena's character. I don't like his promos and you do. Agree to disagree.

I feel the need to clarify. I don't like people complaining the idea of him using humor or insulting the villains. I'm no great fan of his promos, but that's because I'm not generally a fan of any modern promos.

I feel the need to clarify. I don't like people complaining the idea of him using humor or insulting the villains. I'm no great fan of his promos, but that's because I'm not generally a fan of any modern promos. It's difficult to separate the idea from the execution when the execution is done so poorly. I'm not against Cena using humor in his promos in theory - humor is what got him over during his rap gimmick, after all. But the material is so uniformly terrible these days, in addition to being so at-odds with the rest of Cena's character, that it would be best for him to ditch it altogether.

The only ways I can think of are having him lose substantially more often, or channeling that borderline OCD he shows on Total Divas into his wrestling character.
