I just got PVZ 2 and it's great. It's challenging, pretty to look at, and has got some funny dialogue, which are the three things I always want from my games. The pay to play aspect folks talked about isn't that much of a big deal, at least not in the latest version.
They tempt you with power-ups for real money, but 1. You can get many of them just by saving up in-game currency and 2. If you just play the game and think your way through tough stages you won't need them anyway. The one thing that's a problem is that some plants from PVZ 1 like the Snow Pea, Squash, and Jalapeño require real money, which is annoying. But hell, again, you don't need 'em; the plants you get normally do everything.

I have both the first and the second game on my phone, but I have not bothered playing for a while.

Love the first and own it on 3 separate platforms. Hated the facebook game. Haven't bothered with the sequel, probably never will.

Yeah, I play PVZ. But haven't tried the PVZ Garden Warfare yet. Althoug I will. Soon! Been currently addicted on this zombie shooting game my friend recommended, called Tapslayer: Alice in Zombieland. You guys should try it too!

I got back into PvZ2 and have had a blast with it now that they started adding more levels. The daily fiesta games are also fun and give you the chance to use plants that require real money to get.

I ordered the PvZ gimmicked Risk board game off of Amazon as an x-mas gift. Doesn't look terrible, so there's that.

I like the format of the second one a little better, though I wish it had more mini-games. Vasebreaker is the only mini-game from the first that came back. Sure, there are a couple of bowling levels as well, but it just isn't the same. I do love the addition of plant food, though. It certainly affects strategy. There are a couple of zombies types in 2 that can just eat it, though (wizards, fishers, and the squid throwers).
