Not sure if this counts, but Battle Royale did not need a sequel. I'd say that a sequel to explore the aftermath of the competition of the first film was a good idea. But it didn't get the sequel it should have.

I'm surprised that this thread's a year old and seven pages long, yet no one's mentioned Ghostbusters.

Pirates of The Caribbean should've concluded the story at three. It truly was the perfect ending in my opinion.

The Hitcher: let me get this straight. After what happened in the first film, the same driver is going to go all PTSD until one day he decides to face his trauma by picking up another hitchhiker and his carefully selected choice to hopefully not be a psycho is Jake f***ing Busey. f*** you Hitcher 2, and f*** you remake.
From Dusk til Dawn. Completely unnecessary sequels to a pretty great standalone movie. Tv show has been ok so far.
Dumb and Dumber: made a shitty sequel without the two stars and corrected the mistake with a shitty sequel with the two stars

Definitely "The Matrix"
Neo was the One, he destroyed Smith, and the Matrix crashed.
End of story.

If the script was decent then I wouldn't mind another Jaws.
Ice Age 3 is my favorite.

No mention yet of FRIDAY?!
Initial movie was a realistic and funny look into the day of two dudes and their friends who could be actual people (Zeus aside).
The sequels were just ridiculous where everyone was a caricature and trying too hard to be funny - ended up annoying. Also the outrageous plots killed the canon of the original day.

Terminator after #2, same for Alien/Aliens.
Let's forget the third movies and beyond exist.

Gotta disagree with people saying Pirates of the Caribbean. The sequels are of questionable quality, sure, but the entire style of the first film smacks of old time cinema serials, sort of like Indiana Jones, but on the ocean. It has a fun setting, likable characters, fantasy elements that make anything possible in its universe, lots of adventure/fighting/etc. That's something tailor made to become a franchise. Dispute the execution of 2-4, certainly, but it's basically got "If this makes money, MAKE SEQUELS!" stamped on it from the word "go".

Terminator after #2, same for Alien/Aliens. Let's forget the third movies and beyond exist. I could've lived with another Terminator sequel if James Cameron directed a future war centric prequel. Would've loved to have seen an actual war like presentation focusing on John being a revolutionary leader, infiltrating Skynet, and sending Reese back to save Sarah. And I am not talking about Genisys either.

Back to the Future. #2 was okay, and #3 was awful

Here's one for you:
The Resident Evil movie series in its current form.
Are people REALLY that enthralled with Alice's story?
