Would like to post John Oliver's piece on FIFA from the most recent 'Last Week Tonight'... But it may be a little on the politics side of things. But it's on youtube. I recommend you give it a looksy. I echo that. I wanted to post it yesterday but as you said, it's probably a bit too political. And he nails the whole "football is a religion" thing.

Reading articles about the hype surrounding Neymar. I don't think the guy is really that great. He's shown a few flashes of greatness but certainly not enough to convince me that he's worthy of being mentioned with Messi and Ronaldo as one of the very best right now.
Of course, now he'll probably go and have an amazing tournament and make me look like a twat. And if that happens, I'll be happy to admit I was wrong.

So Brazil v Croatia. Predictions & thoughts?
I reckon a comfortable 3-1 win for Brazil, based on the fact I'm not sure what Croatia is going to turn up.

I'm going 4-0 Brazil. I don't think the gulf in quality is quite that big usually but the overwhelming nature of it being the first game in their homeland at the 2014 World Cup and with all the protests and everything that have come before this I just see Brazil playing out of their skin in the first game.

I think Croatia will scare them by going 1-0 up, But Brazil will pull back with a 3-1 win. My bets as to who will advance from each Group A: Brazil and Croatia B: Spain and Netherlands C: Ivory Coast and Japan D: Uruguay and England (Maybe wishful thinking but eh) E: France and Ecuador F: Argentina and Nigeria G: Germany and Portugal H: Belgium and South Korea watch me be horribly wrong now

2-1 Brazil. All scoring happens in the 2nd half.

last time Brazil opened a tournament it was France 98, the beat Scotland 2-1, but were losing 0-1 for awhile in that game, the boys from Brazil have the potential to be rocky at the start.
also out of the 23 man team only 4 play for Brazilian teams, the rest play in Europe. i think the street protests/playing in Brazil won't really have that much of an effect to be honest, i'm secretly hoping for another 1966 for Brazil, i think it would make this world cup more interesting then any other having them go home early.

E: France and Switzerland
F: Argentina and Nigeria
G: Germany and Portugal
H: Belgium and Algeria (Under-rated)

Outside of England I would love a team that is not Favourites at all go all the way.
Last major International Tournament upset I remember was when Greece won Euro 2004.

The hype around Neymar is because he has done it so consistently for Brazil. I don't think anyone is saying he's on Messi and Ronaldo's level for their clubs, but internationally? I think he's better than they are for their countries (although Ronaldo is pretty damn good for Portugal). But Neymar has to ability to win the World Cup for Brazil with his performances. No matter how good Ronaldo plays, the likelihood of Portugal winning the WC during his career is slim.

I'm fuzzy on time zones. Is Eastern Standard Time GMT -5? You might want to check kick off times as I didn't realise the kick-off times had to be amended because it's Daylight Savings now.

I've changed the kick off times in the first post as they were confusing. The times are all in GMT now.
