I've never bought tapes from indy wrestling promotions and I've only read about said promotions online. So I'm wondering: What are some of the good ones? To be more specific, I'm looking for a promotion that creates its own unique characters, has good storylines and matches, and isn't overly focused on workrate. Are there any indy promotions like that?

Chikara is awesome if you haven't already checked them out. I've noticed myself becoming a walking, talking advertisement for them, so they must be good if it makes me do that. I'm not sure what your location is, though, because I can probably tell you about all the best indy's of the south, but otherwise, I'm almost useless.

ROH is the best one out there. Great wrestling, storylines, characters, everything.
There is also PWG, a comedy fed that can be serious when it has to be and also has good characters and wrestlers.

1PW is pretty nifty as well. Just don't have many events. Which could be a positive thing, depending on how you looked at it.
EDIT: Forget that, PWG is indeed, the best promotion out there (reminded by Thriller). Well, the best one that isn't called ROH.

IWA MS has shows that are suppose to be for everyone so they're pretty good.

NWA Anarchy and NWA VA(buy the NIght of the Ironmen dvd, Match of the year). You can also watch them over at the thesuperstation.net/ . Anarchy has a new show every Monday and NWA VA has a new show every two weeks to download. Both feds has an old school NWA feel to it.

I'm a big fan of ROH and Chikara.
I haven't heard of PWG until now, though. Anyone care to describe them in a little more detail? What's they're website?

The obvious choice would have to be Ring Of Honor. Another one that I enjoy in my area is Windy City Pro Wrestling. Windy City is the birthplace of the spectacular career of "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels. Daniels usually comes back to Windy City a few times a year, and several TNA stars usually appear at Windy City's "Battle Of The Belts" supercard every year along with Daniels. Check out their website at the link below; www.windycityprowrestling.com/

That's good because I live in the South (Alabama to be specific). What are the best indy promotions in the South?

ROH is the obvious choice. I'd also recommend Jersey Allstar Pro Wrestling.
I need to check out PWG.

Living on the west coast, PWG is super fed #1 around here. Can't argue with that too, as all of their shows always hav at least one spectacular match on the card. Their DVDs are nicely priced too, and they have great specials through their site.
