So Messi is the Dan Marino/Karl Malone/John Stockton of soccer, right? At international level, pretty much. At club level he's Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Babe Ruth, and Muhammad Ali all rolled into one. The man has won everything there is to win, in both team and individual awards.

It was really tight, but Germany are deserved winners. They've been building for this and getting within touching distance for many years and it paid off.
Messi getting player of the tournament was pretty hilarious and sad in equal measure.

Well done to Germany.
Their style and commitment is admirable, and they finally got some reward for it.
Onwards to Russia now.., they like Brazil can build a stadium in a remote city that is difficult to access.

shows once again Football is a team game and you can't rely on the brilliance of 2 players. Well done Germany, deserved winners.
Now, my attention can go back to Oldham Athletic.....joy!!

And no one is shocked. World Cups = Riots.
What a World Cup... glad I experienced it. It sucks they are Four Years apart, but pending any Zombie Apocalypses or such like that, we'll see how Russia pans out
Needless to say, they have ALOT to love up to after how fantastic this World Cup was.
Don't be Iran vs Nigeria Russia 2018... just don't do it.

Interesting fact: the last 5 winners of the FIFA golden ball for best player in the World Cup have been won by players who didn't win the World Cup. So is it just a sympathy trophy? And for those who want to know 98. Ronaldo 02. Kahn 06. Zidane 10. Forlan 14. Messi.

And for those who want to know 98. Ronaldo 02. Kahn 06. Zidane 10. Forlan 14. Messi. In my opinion, it sort of is. There's no meaning to winning it anyway. When it comes to football, I've never cared much for individual awards given out based on the opinions of others. Edit: And while on the subject of Messi and the Golden Ball, I'd say Maradona is right in saying the award was a 'marketing plan'. The Messi mania was played up to an overbearing level this World Cup, what I believe was an attempt to reach out to new fans who have only ever heard of him and Ronaldo before this tournament. The defense of some saying "Messi carried a mediocre Argentina team" is laughable. Argentina only scored two goals after the group stage, none by Messi, and still all the commentators, presenters and journalists put it all down to the "genius of Messi". The headlines then next day read "Messi leads Argentina to the [whichever round]". No doubt Messi had a good tournament, but whether he was the best is highly debatable.

By the way, don't know if anyone mentioned this here yet, but Ghana was the team with the best performance against Germany in this World Cup.

So, let's get some best/worst talk happening before we put this thread to bed once and for all. After compiling together as many rankings lists as I could find and compiling the scores, this is the #1-#32 ranking I ended up with...
1. Germany 2. Netherlands 3. Colombia 4. Argentina 5. Costa Rica 6. Chile 7. France 8. Algeria 9. United States 10. Brazil 11. Mexico 12. Belgium 13. Uruguay 14. Greece 15. Switzerland 16. Nigeria 17. Croatia 18. Ghana 19. Portugal 20. Ecuador 21. Italy 22. Bosnia and Herzegovina 23. Ivory Coast 24. Spain 25. Iran 26. Australia 27. England 28. Japan 29. Russia 30. South Korea 31. Honduras 32. Cameroon
Other than Brazil possibly being a bit high (probably because they did OK before falling to bits against Germany), that seems about right. As for best goal... James Rodriguez's chest and volley from outside the box against Uruguay was insane. That just beats out the Tim Cahill volley against Netherlands.

I think my dream match for this World Cup would be Columbia vs Germany
Because I think Columbia could have beaten them with James, I really do.

I know it is a little late, but here is Spurs coach Gregg Popovich's recap of the first half of theBrazil - Germany game.... Seriously though, this has been one of the best WC's that I have seen. I am glad the US made it out of the group stages, even surprised since I thought that was the group of death. I wonder how Brazil would have done if they were healthy. I am looking towards 2018 since the last time we (The Yanks) played in Asia, we made the G8. And that was FDM's rambling thoughts.

Ok I don't flat out dislike it but for me I've always preferred International Tournaments That's how I used to be as well until the past couple years. NBC Sports Network covering all of the EPL got me hooked for good last year. I'd love to watch the Bundesliga or La Liga as well but don't have access. I will say, I am trying to get into MLS, but it is hard.

Surprised you had Cameroon dead last instead of Iran. Sounds about right to me. Cameroon was a disaster, right to the point where they started to attack each other physically. Iran had a great defense and showed a spirited performance vs. Argentina. Anyway, great World Cup. Even if Argentina would have won, I would be happy with the overall tournament.

And to the surprise of no one, the Beeb trounced ITV in the ratings for the final. 9 million more people tuned into the BBC's coverage. Although the actual figure was only 12 million on BBC , which whilst I don't think includes the HD channels and I know due to people watching TV on other devices, figures aren't what they used to be but even so, that still seems low.
