As much as his commentary is easy to mock, I thought it was very effective. He could play the role of the knowledgeable veteran really well. He's certainly underrated. Not only this, but I think his enthusiasm for the Japanese and luchador talent he wasn't familiar with was something that could resonate with the folks at home. He caught some flack for not knowing or being more familiar with the talent ahead of time, but he never at any point disrespected their athleticism and, when next to Tony's play-by-play and Tenay's wealth of knowledge, I think it was incredibly affective to have someone vocalize how we all felt seeing such incredible feats for the first time as well. Not to turn this to a negative thread, so I'm spoilering the pessimism {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Compare that to Zbysczko whose commentary for any performer's style that wasn't traditionally American/Canadian was patronizing at best and dismissive at worst. Clearly someone who didn't get "it" and took it for granted, whereas Dusty captured what made it such a spectacle. Here's Zbyszko commenting on the stuff he said about the cruiserweights.

"Boy, he wore his old tired ass out."
Do yourself a favor and look up the video of Harlem Heat vs. Public Enemy's street fight from Uncensored to hear some great Dusty Rhodes commentary.

"I used to do that to my little brother!" Public Enemy puts a trash can over one of Harlem Heat's heads (sorry, was watching in 144p) and then punch it.

Schiavone: He hit him with the edge of the baking pan - Heenan: Brownie pan. Schiavone: Thank you. Heenan: Don't mention it.

I love Dusty's commentary on Saturday Night. Easily the best part of that show!

"That ain't no 2 count! That's a low-blow!" Dusty while laughing during the Heat vs. Public Enemy match, which was very entertaining I I recall.
