After the disasters of 2011-2012 the Red Sox are wary about handing out long term/big money contracts to anyone past 30. While I generally agree with this Lester is one of few people I make an exception for. The worst part is that Lester loves Boston and might have been willing to resign for a little less than what he would have gotten on the open market, but the Red Sox ridiculously low balled him so much in the spring (offering him only a 4 year $70 million dollar deal) that he shut off all negotiations and now looks like he'll test the market. The Sox might sill resign him but it will cost them far more than it would if they didn't dick with the guy in the first place. The Red Sox ownership group acting like paupers after lucking into a World Series victory last season has grown quite irritating. Yes, they were able to miraculously find a suitor to take on the grotesque contracts for Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, and Fat Josh Beckett. And yes, they won a championship last season after handing out short-term, low-risk, high-reward contracts to people like Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes, Koji Uehara, Mike Napoli, and David Ross. But last season should not be indicative of a trend. The Red Sox will have more money than they know what to do with this off-season, it's time to either pay Jon Lester the money he deserves or trade him for some top-tier prospects. Dealing him for Matt Kemp accomplishes nothing except for the organization taking on a bloated contract for a player of decreasing skills. I'd be fine with Boston handing Lester a five-year, $120 million contract, because he's deserved it, and projecting the roster for next season, he's going to have to be the ace and anchor of a pitching staff that will be loaded with young pitchers. It will likely be Lester, John Lackey (if he's not dealt), Rubby De La Rosa, Clay Buchholz, and the fifth spot will likely go to the winner of a spring training battle between Brandon Workman, Allen Webster, Henry Owens, Anthony Ranaudo, Edwin Escobar, and Matt Barnes. Boston will have a gaggle of young starting pitchers over the next half decade. I see no problem in loosening the purse strings for the bonafide ace who can be the teacher to these students.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Before he answered a question at the news conference following the Baseball Hall of Fame's induction ceremony on Sunday, Joe Torre addressed someone he regrettably forgot to thank the way he planned in his speech -- George Steinbrenner.
"I missed mentioning and thanking the most obvious guy in the world when you talk about the Yankees," the former manager said of the late owner. "It was so obvious that I was going to do it, I went right past it."
Torre, who won four world championships at the helm of the Yankees from 1996 to 2007, said he felt "terrible" that he left Steinbrenner out of his speech.
After being fired as manager from the Mets, Braves and Cardinals, Torre's path to the Hall of Fame began with the Yankees.
Steinbrenner tabbed the then 55-year-old in November 1995, and Torre's appreciation for the entire Steinbrenner family is ongoing despite his rocky departure from the team after the 2007 season.
Torre, who compiled a 1,173-767 record as Yankee manager, said neither side knew how to say goodbye.
Returning to Yankee Stadium for a memorial honoring Steinbrenner in September 2010 helped mend the relationship between Torre and the team. On Sunday, Torre wanted to make sure his appreciation for the Steinbrenner family was clear.
"They made my whole professional life," Torre said. "I had a good playing career and all that, but managing the Yankees -- what you set out in baseball to do is get to the World Series. To have the opportunity to do that with George so many times was an incredible feeling."

Multiple reports have surfaced in the Jon Lester trade rumors today.
- ESPN's Jim Bowden today reported that teams that are "in" on Lester include (deep breath) the Blue Jays, Mariners, Brewers, Cardinals, Dodgers, Orioles, and Marlins.
- Yahoo Sports is reporting that the Pirates are a dark horse in the Lester discussions, and a possible deal could send prospect Josh Bell to Boston in exchange for Lester.
- Comcast SportsNet's Sean McAdam said that the Athletics and Braves have contacted the Red Sox to inquire about the lefty ace.
- The rumor about Lester heading to the Dodgers still exists, but any Lester-for-Kemp deal appears to be quashed.
So, all told, 10 of 29 teams have expressed interest in Jon Lester. If the Red Sox aren't going to sign him to a long-term extension, and they piss away the opportunity to have one-third of the league bidding against one another for two months of Lesters' services, they're categorically insane.

Rumor is that Saturday's starter might not even be a Cardinal yet. David Price? Cole Hamels? Jon Lester? Come on down!

I really want the Cards to get one of these guys, but I sure hope that some offensive guy (Longoria? Zobrist?) are included, because they need some offensive help badly. I'll be honest I hope somehow either Taveras or Wong are still around and I hope not both are traded, but it might be unavoidable to be able to get some real help.

Rumor is a possible Tavaras/Miller/Comp pick for Price trade.

Awesome news. Now if only those jerks at Time Warner Cable can get their heads out of their asses and make a deal with the other cable and satellite distributors to carry the Dodgers channel so everyone can actually listen to Vin Scully.

Max Scherzer improved to 13-3, holding the White Sox to one run over seven innings as the Tigers enjoyed an easy 7-2 win on Wednesday.
