Well, the Blue Jays failed to do anything in the trade deadline.

So all the Rays got for a year and a half of Price is Drew Smyly, Nick Franklin and Wily Adames Hey, the Mariners got Austin Jackson in the mix of things. I won't complain about it (although I still don' know WHERE he will play, what with James "Eletric" Jones hogging the centerfield. But he is in his rookie slump where everybody has the book on him now, so I guess it is good we have Jackson now).

I don't know how today could have been a better day for the Red Sox organization. The concern was that by trading Jon Lester, the franchise was admitting defeat for the immediate future, 2014 and 2015, but with a long-term vision in sight by acquiring a top-flight prospect. The big rumor was Lester to Pittsburgh for Josh Bell. Well, they were able to flip Lester for an outfielder that is now what fans hope Bell could be in a decade. By acquiring Yoenis Cespedes, the Red Sox filled a colossal hole in their outfield and lineup, dealing for that right-handed power bat to protect David Ortiz. Now, this season is a lost cause, but I'll take a 3-4-5 of Cespedes, Ortiz, and Mike Napoli all summer long next season.
With the John Lackey trade, they were able to rid themselves of a potential curmudgeon, somebody who possibly could have turned into a malcontent in the off-season because of his impending contract issues. In dealing Lackey to the Cardinals, they picked up a 25 year-old pitcher whose best years are still well ahead of him, and an outfielder/first baseman who could feast on the short fence in left field for the foreseeable future.
However, my favorite trade of the day and possibly my favorite trade ever was dealing Stephen Drew's useless, worthless existence. TO THE YANKEES. Mine eyes have seen the glory. No longer do we need to worry about the organization submarining Xander Bogaerts' development at shortstop. That is now his position and the rest of the 2014 season will be about whether he can sink or swim as the everyday shortstop, and on top of it all, Will Middlebrooks will be given his final opportunity to take the third base gig for himself.
There's no hope for 2014. But every move the Red Sox made today gives them nothing but hope for 2015 and beyond.

I'm sure the excuse for Toronto getting nothing is banking on a future, but what future? Jose Bautista, while our best player, gets hurt all the time. Edwin Encarnacion and Mark Buerhle are two people left from what basically was a disasterous trade with the Marlins and they are just too damn inconsistent to be reliable. Jose Reyes and Miguel Cabrera are most likely not going to stay here when their contracts is up. R.A. Dickey has proven what I knew all along when we got him, that he was a one year wonder. The only future that I see is in Marcus Strosman and Brett Lawrie and that's about it.
I would normally be okay with our trading deadline inactivity since normally at this time, we are basically out of the playoff running,. But we are 2 and a half games behind the Orioles and 2 games up for the final wild card spot So excuse me if I find my team doing nothing to better the team on the deadline a bit well.....stupid and arrogant.

As an A's fan, we have probably the deadliest rotation in the majors with Lester, Shark, Kazmir and Gray. But with Cespedes gone, there is no real power in our lineup. The outfield, once our biggest strength, is now our biggest question mark thanks to injuries to Crisp and Gentry, and never knowing which Josh Reddick will show up. Still I like our chances.

Y'know, Detroit, you could've avoided having to give up anything to get Price if you had simply not given Fister away to the Nats for friggin' nothing. Quit reminding me. I was more upset than most because Fister was one of my favorites the moment he got traded. And all we got in return was a utility player we in turn traded for another shortstop who only lasted 10 games, a reliever currently in our bullpen (so he's horrible right now) and a starter who could be good but will probably be in the minors for a bit longer.

@mattgelb Amaro said Phillies did not ask for “top prospects.” Criticized other GMs for not being aggressive enough. Oh, Ruin Tomorrow Jr., please never, ever change.

I like what the Sox did today. I still wish they would have tried to sign Lester but at least they aren't giving up on next season. They needed bats and they got them. An added bouns is that it should take a little pressure off kids like Bogaerts and Bradley. If they can make a deal for a pitcher or two we could be right back in business.

Once again, the Reds do nothing when they definitely needed something. Guess the season's now over for them.

I am really glad the Cards didn't trade Taveras or Wong, as I think they will both be star players, and considering that Matt Adams is on his way to being a star player, there just was no where for Alan Craig to play and he had done his damnedest to play himself out of a spot by himself. He's been great in the past, but he has been completely lost (and I'm not 100% sure he isn't still hurt from that foot injury from last year) so maybe he can find his way in the other league. I think Joe Kelly will be missed more, but even then not too terribly much as he doesn't go deep in games when he starts, which was the main reason the Cards got Lackey and Masterson, because they had way too many guys who do not go more than 5 inn.
It is fitting that the Cards will be playing the Red Sox 3 games next week with a possibility of Kelly facing Lackey, sounds almost like it was booked like wrestling.

Oscar Tavaras has done exactly jack and shit to show me why management has a hard on for him. For all the hype, he's done nothing. I hope he proves me wrong but it's not looking good yet.

He's 22 years old. He's barely had 100 major league ABs. He's raked at every level he's played at. He will hit at the major league level.
