Between the loss of their stud left-handers (Perez, Holland, Harrison), Nelson Cruz's departure and Prince being done for the season, it's Finagle's Law for Texas.
Speaking of, looks like it might be TJS for Masahiro-san, effectively bringing an end to a competitive season for the Yankees.

Tanaka potentially needing TJS shows what the flaw was from the get-go with the Yankees this year: he's obviously been fantastic, but when your rotation effectively revolves around major, expensive signings, and you lack any minor league depth to those guys up should they go down, you really paint yourself into a corner if the worst comes to pass. It's fair to say that no team could survive the kind of injury luck the Yankees rotation has had so far (injuries to their ace with Tanaka, #2 with CC, and decent back-end arm in Nova), but the Yankees have next to nothing to replace them with.
Additionally, this season has really been an extension of what last season was for the Yanks; they had a negative run differential in 2013, yet still managed 85 wins. Rather than read the writing on the wall, that they had an old team that had managed to outperform their numbers and what have you, they doubled down in the hopes that they could piece together another 3 years of winning ball by signing Tanaka/Beltran/Ellsbury/McCann/etc. Now they're STILL outperforming their run differential, and the weakness of the AL East is keeping them alive, but you can't be that lucky forever, not even when you've got $200 million+ in payroll available to cover up mistakes.

Don't forget Pineda. Kuroda is pretty much the only part of their Opening Day starting rotation that isn't facing serious injury.

Brandon Phillips has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his left thumb and will undergo surgery. He tore it while having a twitter fight with the local beat reporters. Apparently he got so into typing the all-caps F-bombs that he hit the keys a little too hard and how he's on the DL.

Is it just me or are there more major injuries this year than usual. Especially to pitchers.

1 or 2 months ago, somebody on Pinstripe Alley wrote the greatest intro to a game recap I've ever seen.

I have a very casual interest in the Yankees and even I feel deflated about Tanaka's injury. That's just crushing to that team. No way you can replace 3/5 of a starting rotation like that...and I'm BARELY counting McCarthy.

I'm not a Yankees fan, far from it, but damn no way as a sports fan and person can I feel good about this. You've got a 25 year old who came in with massive hype. Yeah it's just half a year, but at 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA, and a 135/19 SO/BB ratio, that's pretty damn impressive. Oh, and having to more or less carry the rotation as well. Eerily, his numbers match up close with Nomo's rookie campaign. Nomo was 13-6 with a 2.54 ERA in 191 innings. Tanaka's numbers are through 129. Tanaka has waaaaaaaaaaay better control though, with 59 fewer walks.

Sad this happened and this basically knocks the Yanks out of the playoff talks.
