The Cubs are trying to help the Braves/Bucs/Fish get that last Wild Card spot. No one wants to take it from the Crew.

You know it's a good night when the Mariners win by out-slugging someone, having Felix pitch 8 innings of 1 run ball and Rodney gets a save without putting anyone on base.
And the last part is the most difficult one!

Justin Verlander was knocked around for seven runs (six earned) over 6 2/3 innings as he fell to 12-12 on Wednesday against the Indians.
Those big money deals for Pitchers never work out

Those big money deals for Pitchers never work out Didn't Justin have like 2 years left on his current deal before getting this extension? I could be wrong about that, but the argument is the same, giving $100 million plus to pitchers is asinine. Epic game between the Dodgers and Nats last night. Nats won in 14 innings, LaRoche didn't even start the game and still drove in 5 runs. Nats are 2 games ahead of the Dodgers for best record in the NL.

The thing with Verlander, or at least as I always saw him, is that his control is somewhat inconsistent. When he is on, he can put the ball where he wants, and all his pitches have bite. However, unlike, say, Felix, Kershaw and Lester, he can't really make adjustments when his control is weak, thus leading to a lot of walks and pitches in the middle that are rather easy to hit at the major league level. He does have ace quality, but if he doesn't solve his control issues by the end of next season, he'll quickly become a shell of what he was. As for big money pitchers... Felix is doing just fine

So...how long 'til Kershaw's career fizzles out, a la Lincecum and Verlander?

So...how long 'til Kershaw's career fizzles out, a la Lincecum and Verlander? Doesn't throw as hard, I believe his fastball tops out at 94. Only 26, I think he's a solid bet to be a pretty good pitcher during that contract.

And Kershaw has probably the best control out of all lefties in the big leagues. That will give him longevity.

Ron Washington has resigned due to a "personal matter."
I get the sneaking feeling this has to do with his past drug problems. I wish him the best.
