He isn't really big enough to be a believable "monster".
Big guy, but not huge, especially compared to other wrestlers.
Being more early Mankind/Cactus Jack sort of character would've worked better.

Well, what you're saying is that his character worked cause Abyss is a mix between a Kane-like monster and a Mankind-type hardcore nuts. Personally I think he sort of worked for a time as a monster but these type of characters are hard substain for a long time. I mean the guy has been Abyss since 2003. There comes a time where you have done everything that can be done and all there need to be done is having the guy change characters.
