Was it a fallout or just each wanting to try a singles career?

Hawk's drug issues, from what I understand.
He just sorta bailed on wrestling for a while.

I believe Hawk walked out during an overseas tour, pissed off about pay. Animal had to work handicap matches against the Beverly Brothers and Animal hurt his back during a double team move. After that, Animal retired and decided to collect on his Lloyds of London policy while Hawk worked a bunch of different areas. I remember he worked ECW, SMW, NJPW, WNW (Group ran by Heyman and Crockett)and WCW.

Hawk's drug issues, from what I understand. He just sorta bailed on wrestling for a while. That puts a lot of the appearances and disappearances into perspective. After the tag team split, Hawk was in WCW briefly from Clash of the Champions August 1993 and only lasted a few months, if that. He came back randomly in May 1995, I think re-debuting at the pre-show for Slamboree. He had a match against Kurasawa on the show and left not too long after. He and Animal showed up in February or March 1996 but by late May or early June, they were gone. It's sad to think how far they had fallen even from their WWF re-debut in early 1997 to early 1998. It definitely gave a talker like Road Dogg lots of fire for his pre-match rants. The LOD 2000 gimmick did very little, if anything, for them. I was hoping it would help newcomer Droz but he only had part in the craziness.

Hawk left. Animal continued on, but had a career-stalling injury not long after that which kept him out of wrestling for a few years. Hawk continued to wrestle in Japan, briefly in WCW, and on some indies.

I seem to remember Hawk having a case of TouringinJapanitis as reported in one of the Aptermags: he was teaming with Kensuke Sasake at the time. It makes sense, then, as to why Sasake was in WCW for that cup of coffee later on.

Animal also spent some time teaming with Crush, this wasn't too long after he split from Demolition. I liked that team.

Reading Bret Hart's book I remember him saying at Summerslam '92 Hawk was loaded up on Somas for his match against Money Inc. and was gone after the tour.

Someone just asked this on Meltzer's show. The WWE started drug testing, and Hawk bailed. Neither Hawk or Animal were super happy anyway in WWE, they didn't make as much money as they were told they would, and they weren't pushed as main eventers.

Crush was fun. Liked the way he would throw punches. Didn't those punches look like they could knock someone's head off? Crush was such an underrated power wrestler.
