Ever since I used to be one of those "I was born in the wrong generation/rap is crap!/classic rock is the only REAL music!" teenagers, I've kept my mind open to music for years. However, like any other human, I don't love every genre out there.
However, I've recently been coming around to Alternative something fierce. Even though Rock is my home, I find myself sleeping over at Alternative's house much more frequently lately.
So, FAN, what genre or genres have you come around to lately?

Couldn't stand hip hop as a kid, now it's like 60% of what I usually listen to.
I've also gotten into country influenced rock more, stuff like Dinosaur Jr. or The Men.

For whatever reason, rap from the 80's. I hate all other forms of rap, but lately I've found myself really into stuff like Run DMC, Fat Boys, and Public Enemy.

J-rock was very odd to me 10 years ago.
Now, I really like Dir en grey (though they're really weird extreme metal these days) and the pillows.

That big, epic, majestic orchestral soundtrack sound. Like Patrick Doyle's work on the first Thor movie or Murray Gold's Dr. Who soundtrack.

Rap and Modern Country.
Modern country is by and large, awful, but it's just the most cheerful genre in the world. Oh , and pop punk or whatever. Paramore is a ton of fun.

Select pop princesses, particularly Christina and Katy. They're nice to look at, which honestly is their first strength, but I found myself actually liking some of their songs! "Back to Basics" was a pretty good album with some retro touches, for instance. The Katy connection is stronger with me because I know she's friends with Shannon Woodward, whom I adore.

I have to ask by what you define alternative? Much like the "indie" label, alternative could pretty much be anything and everything with few exceptions. ie. Talking Heads, Nirvana, Velvet Underground, Gorillaz, The Smiths, Sublime, Wilco and The Shins could all be considered alternative and yet they all sound completely different from each other. I believe a lot of alternative stations will also dabble into stuff from Bob Marley who's by and large the epitome of reggae. As you say "rock" is your home, rock can be so many different things. ie. Nirvana and say.... Poison. Both very much considered rock, completely different sounds. As for the question itself, I'd recently went through a bit of a late 60s/early 70s kick and listened to a ton of Iggy/Stooges, Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, etc..., not stuff I typically listen to on a regular basis. Hard for me to answer this question since the few genres I detest (country aside from a few close to country artists like Son Volt or Hank III, and 80s glam/hair metal, pop/top 40/whatever you call what it these days) I'm usually pretty open in what I listen to.
