Just saw this on the Beyond Wrestling Facebook page:
I haven't heard of any major indies doing this before and thought it was a pretty intriguing way of releasing new material. Anyone else have any thoughts on this or know if it has been done before?

If I'm not mistaken, you could also burn it to a DVD with a program like DVD Flick as long as it's for personal use, no?

So, I ended up buying one of these at tonight's Beyond show. They went for $40, which I felt was fair for 4 events. Of the 10 that they started the evening with, when we were leaving, they ended with 8 left. So, the idea definitely didn't seem to take off like they'd hoped. Not announcing the price prior to the event probably didn't help much. Most fans go to a show with a fairly set budget, so dropping $40 right off the top can be a huge drawback. I personally took a bit of extra money to this show, because I very rarely come home with souvenirs and kind of wanted to this one time.

I am still a sucker for legit physical media, but for the money it was worth it. Plus, this was an opportunity to relive these events without having to wait forever for them to produce an actual dvd.

If I'm not mistaken, you could also burn it to a DVD with a program like DVD Flick as long as it's for personal use, no? Actually if, best case scenario, they're .iso files, you could burn them to a DVD at legit DVD quality using Disk Utility, a program that comes installed on pretty much every computer with a recordable disc drive. |

The people I know who've had the most success with the medium have made the USB's have some sort of either design that would warrant a cool display around the house, or connected to a necklace of some sort for a cool way to make them portable. |

The files are 720p .mp4 files. I've got programs to burn them to dvd if I am so inclined. It is a twist turn thumbdrive, nothing fancy. When I am not so exhausted, I am gonna watch a few matches and check the picture quality.

I'd say $15-20 would be fair for 4 live events on a thumbdrive. Keep in mind that an 8GB flash drive these days costs about $8. That would mean the promotion is selling each show for less than $2. Not much profit there to put toward running future shows. That's also assuming each show is less than 2GB of space. If it's higher resolution than 2GB, then they need 16GB flash drives, which cost even more. I like how they are thinking outside the box and trying new things by attempting this, but financially I don't see it being a positive. With the blank flash drives running them a minimum of $8, while a spindle of blank DVD-R's cost about 25 cents per disc, they're better off just selling DVD's. |

I love this idea. They should just announce the price first, maybe do two shows on an 8gb to lower the price point and customize them in some way (whether it be screen printing or even a sticker).
Obviously for Beyond the empty 8gb drives are going to be more than half the price of the 16gb, cutting into their profits, but packaging two shows for $20 would make them much more viable option for purchase.
For those complaining about wanting "legit physical media", having a thumb drive with the shows is logistically not a hell of a lot different than DVD. You still have them on a physical object... something you can hold in your hands... rather than having them on demand, and a 720p .mp4 would be objectively much better quality than your average DVD. That and most flat screens and pretty much every computer would be able to play them. They'd also be ready to instantly move to any other device you normally watch video on, from PS3 to iPad to your phone (at better than DVD quality).
This is actually a HUGE step forward, and putting them on DVD afterwards would actually be heading backwards. Anyone who doesn't recognize that is missing quite a bit.

It aesthetically goes better with my existing collection, I would never borrow a USB to a friend for any reason, if I'm going to be somewhere that may not have USB capabilities and want to watch something, it'll be easier to just take a DVD copy. |

Again, the vast majority of flat screens, a good chunk of the later CRT TVs and most DVD players have a usb port and built in mpeg video capabilities. Maybe you just have never used them? I'm not going to say usb-only the best option for everyone but it fits the majority for sure. The chances are slim that your hotel has a CRT TV without a usb port but provides a DVD player and that DVD player also doesn't have a usb port. At a certain point you'd just be better off watching wrestling on your laptop or phone anyway. |
