The threads concerning ECW stars made me think about this. I actually agree, at least somewhat, with Lawler in that it does seem perplexing that Vince would give away valuable air time to a rival promotion at a time when the WWF was struggling. But my personal theory has long been that Vince was trying to use ECW to replicate what WCW had done a couple years before; book an "invasion" angle where another promotion comes in and acts like they are taking over, like what Eric Bischoff had done with Nash and Hall at the start of the NWO story. ECW ended up being the choice because of they're increasing prominence on the indy scene, and because the WWF already had several stars under contract who had worked there who went to bat for Heyman. The fact that ECW trashed on WCW constantly probably helped too, since that probably reflected the best possible taste in Vince's eyes. Vince more or less tried another "invasion" angle not long afterward with the NWA, which of course fizzled out in short order. But it did get a foot in the door and started a back and forth relationship that turned out to be pretty beneficial for both sides.

There were many attempts to counter the nWo storyline, which includes the ECW invasion, the NWA invasion, DX, McMahon turning heel and forming a heel stable, etc. Vince was desperate in '97 and would probably have tried anything.

Of course the greatest invasion of them all was when DX invaded Nitro. Total game changer.

The way he put it was "It did huge numbers for us on our show with just our wrestlers-how much bigger would it have done for WCW with WCW AND WWF wrestlers on it?" I actually find that makes sense, would at least have netted WCW a win in the war for that week.

I knew of ECW, but back then I had no way of watching it. I was into the angle and was kind of excited about seeing acts I had only been reading about on the internet.

I was able to watch ECW well before this invasion happened. When the whole WWF/ECW was going on I swear my markdom for professional wrestling was one of it's few peaks.

Same random fan: "But didn't you guys give away free tickets last year so you could pretend you sold out the Alamo Dome?" Kevin Dunn off camera: "Cut the feed! God damn it! Cut it!"

Also, just 2 years earlier Raw was being held in high school gyms.

Also, just 2 years earlier Raw was being held in high school gyms. I remember that place in Lowell, Mass. that looked like a banquet hall. I remember that place well because it was where the famous HBK "Lost my smile" speech happened and also the famous HHH-HBK European title "match".

Nitro had pulled ahead in the ratings by giving the impression that anything could happen on their show. Vince was trying to prove that anything could happen on his show too - they even have guys from other promotions!

If only we could get Vince back into his "so desperate I'm willing to try anything" state of mind.

I wish they would hold TV tapings at small arenas again. It creates a different atmosphere than Arenas. Arenas should be saved for the big shows.
