I remember when it first was announced ECW was coming back a lot of people thought TNA would die then and there because they thought all of the ECW people would jump at WWE money (and most didn't)
ECW caught it's groove eventually. Too high of expectations that ended up not working because Creative decided not to promote it as equal to Raw and Smackdown. The other issue that hurt ECW, is if guys from developmental started to get over, they were moved to Raw rather quickly.
Also exposed a lot of weaknesses in developmental at the time as guys who were considered good prospects at the time, flopped (Ricky Ortiz, Gavin Spears)

I still remember thinking Christian versus Ryder was one of the best title matches of the year. They did so much work to hype Zack and the match made it feel like he could win. Christian as a fighting champion actually worked because they built up contenders and each feud managed to feel fresh.

It showed people what WWE was capable of without all of the usual complications/rewrites that Raw often deals with.
The ECW nostalgia trip was fine to start things off, but it had a very limited shelf life for a weekly show. As great a champ as Big Show was, once they focused on the younger talent things really started kicking into high gear.

The 3rd and equal brand shit kinda died when we saw Chavo, as ECW Heavyweight Champion, enter the Royal Rumble and they didn't even try cover it. It was almost a 'now he wants to challenge for a real title' moment.
I lost interest between Punk's drafting and it essentially becoming 'The Christian Show', but I do recall my time with it being well-spent.

I liked it, if for no other reason than it evolved into NXT, serving the same function the entire time. That said, I also think it would've been more successful without the ECW moniker. Just as TNA is failing at it now, as in the past, it was doomed to fail because there was no way they would be able to capture the original attitude and feeling of ECW. Plus, even with Heyman at the helm, he still had to answer to Vince and the workers still had to be under the WWE umbrella. Had some of the talent not been used so horribly in the past(Chavo/Christian, etc), they could have possibly made quality champions.
