It's not so much that anyone believed she was fat or ugly; they really just went for the laziest possible story they could tell.

Problem was that part of wrestling is suspending disbelief. I can buy Skandar Akbar as a character since he has actual ties to the middle east, but this was just totally against any sense of logic I could use. I went to a house show in New Orleans (that I alluded to earlier). She did have a good bit of people cheering for her despite being the heel as a lot of people didn't seem to buy the angle. It was really awkward hearing fans yell stuff at her after the show (when she was leaving the arena) about her weight. May have been her just acting really good but it did appear that the angle was really getting to her beyond being "in character". A few people yelled nice things to her to which she gave a slight but appreciative smile that really made it seem like she hated what she was doing. On a side note, I stopped teaching because I absolutely hated it and literally dreaded waking up each day. Towards the end, after people found out I had resigned, some students came to me and thanked me. I told them that I really appreciated it and would give them that same smile. I really think that angle caused her to go to that dark place with wrestling where she really hated to go to work each day. Combine that unhappiness with her cancer scare and I'm really surprised she didn't leave sooner. *- For those that don't know, on her shoot dvd she mentions that she felt a lump and was very scared that it might be cancer. It caused her to reevaluate her life and decided that she wanted to focus on other things. Her mother had cancer so it did shake her up a bit.

This angle was definitely one of the building factors that led to my near decade hiatus from watching wrestling.
I think one of the things that made this storyline worse was who was involved. If it was one of the less talented, playboy-bait divas, I wouldn't have cared. But I knew from interviews and things that Molly was a genuinely sweet, nice, and cool person. And even though I wasn't a Christian at the time, I also respected how sincere she seemed in her beliefs. So the really horrible gimmick just felt more like bullying.

There ARE people out there (sociopaths, I'd figure) who would hear the commentary about Molly, internalize it, and after that any woman who didn't look like, say, Trish or Torrie Wilson would suddenly be a "fattie" to them...I'm not saying this angle would be the direct cause of them doing that, but rather just another reinforcement of a twisted thought process that's, sadly, much more prevalent than I think any of us would want to believe. I never look to wrestling to provide me with true highbrow entertainment, but yeah, I'm with others who've said that this was one of those angles that had me on the "Why would I watch this crap?" train, to go along with plenty of others. Stuff like this is a big reason why I have basically zero nostalgia for Attitude Era WWF.

Well that's true; I mainly meant Creative, which in this case was anything but, i.e. it was the simplest thing they could think of for a feud: "I know, they're women, they'll feud about their looks."

Ah, gotcha. My brother, who hasn't consistently watched wrestling outside of a random show here or there since probably the year 1999, just mentioned to me today how it seems like all women's wrestling characters are either evil gossip queens or bland "bounce on stage and pump your fist at the crowd" babyfaces who feud over stuff they would almost never have male wrestlers get involved with. Mentioned how you can think of men who've played all kind of crazy gimmicks, but very, very few women who've gotten to go outside that box. Backs up that Nash quote in the other thread, how WWE is a lot of violence and sex written by people who can't fight and seemingly know very little about sex. Guess you can just add "writing about women despite apparently not knowing any in real life."

It's like the Seinfeld episode where they're writing the pilot. They don't include Elaine cuz they don't know what she'd say.
When they're talking about it later, Elaine gets pissed and Jerry says something along the lines of "Even right now, I know you're gonna say something, but I don't know what.."

Molly is probably the most beautiful woman to ever have anything to do with wrestling. Agreed. And I think alot of it is her girl next door look and vibe. Molly's pinup style photoshoots were always beautiful and she never had to pose or wear anything trashy or overtly sexual to do it. I'm not saying I don't like a pic of Trish Stratus bending over in a bikini the size of a postage stamp, but Molly seemed able to convey so much more in what is a very unorthodox way for a Diva photoshoot.

Wow there is a lot of hyperbole in this thread I mean Molly's pretty and her ass isn't gross or fat by any means but "hottest female wrestler ever" and "prettier than anyone in the WWE" is stretching it a bit, I mean personal opinion obviously, but Molly is my definition of average, she's not unattractive she's not hot, she's just kinda meh I suppose is the best way to say it.

Seemed like bullying someone for not being a plastic slut. One of the few times I had a hard time separating the performer from the person, which is rarely a good thing.

BTW, I really wish that I could find a particular picture of Molly that I lost when my last computer crashed. It's one from when she had shorter brown hair. She was dressed in jeans and a black T-shirt with the sleeves torn off and she is leaning against the hood of a car. She was stunningly gorgeous in that picture and I would like another copy of it if you have it. In return, I give you a copy of every Molly picture that I have in my Photobucket library: And a bonus:

I still haven't figured out how THIS: is considered fat or ugly in any sense of the word. Easily the least enjoyable angle I've seen in WWE. I mean, Triple H and Booker T at Wrestlemania 19 tho...

I mean, Triple H and Booker T at Wrestlemania 19 tho... As bad as that was, Molly's angle is still the low point of wrestling for me, even against stuff like HHH-T and Katie Vick. After 3 decades of watching wrestling I expect stupid angles (Katie Vick, Gooker), I expect botched angles (HHH-Booker) and I expect to see some trashy stuff (Eddiesploitation, xenophobic angles) and usually just shrug it off. That Molly angle was the first time I really felt a total disconnect with something.

I hate that having flat pancake butt and big fake plastic titties is what consitutes as "hot" in WWE. Eh, is that really the case anymore? Usually it's one or the other at worst depending on your definition but people are allowed to find whoever they want "hot". I mean Stacy Keibler didn't have big fake tits and she was considered hot, maybe the hottest. Trish's ass was f***ing huge and she was considered the top Diva (which makes her storyline with Molly all the more ironic). AJ is probably who most male fans like the most these days and she doesn't have the look you're talking about. I mean I'm sure people will argue "ZOMG AJ HAS NO ASS" but she's also very petite, her having a big ass would just look odd. And she damn sure doesn't have the big fake plastic titties.

I think the issue most fans had with it was less that the "supermodel" look was considered hot but that she was considered "fat" for some odd reason. Combined that the fact that she seems to be a genuinely nice person the entire angle almost seemed to attack who she was as a person and not as a character.
Just my opinion, but I think for a lot of people it just went way beyond a story line and into bullying. Not to mention that the performer doing the role seemed to be uncomfortable in it as well.
The attacks on her were more damning than WWE's version of a "hot chick" at that time.

Hated the angle. Completely stupid. Hey, speaking of Stupid Molly Holly storylines, remember the storyline where Chris Nowinski kept talking about wanting to take Molly's virginity? That was pretty damn awful too That was straight after the Molly has a fat ass angle. :/
