He was still World Champion so how did they rid of him and what was his last appearance?

Don't know what they said on-air, but I can say his last WCW appearance was on Clash XV just the month before. Defending the title against Bobby Eaton in a 2 out of 3 falls match.
So it must've been pretty quick from "Flair is champ" to "Who?" within a month.

As I recall, they acknowledged that Flair and WCW were not coming to terms on Flair's WCW contract or something like that, and this is how they explained Barry Windham going in the cage against Luger at GAB '91.

I believe this was the initial announcement: youtu.be/lug4JnlsJdEIf I recall they used similar verbiage on WCW Saturday Night, saying Flair was suspended indefinitely due to contractual disputes and stripped of the title.

I remember Ric Flair having a press conference saying he was parting ways with WCW. The video aired on all the WCW shows at the time. Then it was announced that Lex Luger and Barry Windham would be wrestling for the vacant title in less than two weeks at the Great American Bash. I think they wanted to crown a new champion as soon as possible to move away from people talking about Flair.

The reaction from a 13 year old (s)mark at the time was like "Why is Jim Herd on my TV...wait..what??.. no more Flair...why??...Barry Windham against Lex Luger?? why do they need to be in a cage??... Barry is nowhere near a main event guy... why not Sting??...oh this is gonna suck."

Barry is as good as any wrestler who ever laced up the boots. He had the look, and on top of that he could work and cut a promo as good as anyone. Yet, they never pushed him as anything but an upper midcard guy when in fact he was the true "total package" wrestler and would have made a great top heel. Luger should have gotten the belt back in '89 after he turned heel. There was no one in WCW at that time who had more intensity and more in the zone with their character than Luger. They kept him at the U.S. title and kept the strap around Flair, and by the time '91 rolled around Luger was still an effective heel but nowhere near what he was in '89.

Totally different topic, but why is it Luger and Windham never feuded for the US title in 1988 when Windham first turned on Luger? That seems like an ideal feud for Lex at that point rather than rushing him into a world title feud with Flair where he himself wasn't ready for the main belt but the fans wanted to see him win.
As far as the 1991 Flair thing goes, I have no idea what Herd was thinking. Why not just job Flair at GAB 1991 to Luger and then release him? I actually on some levels agree with Herd's assessment that Flair was stale on top and WCW needed a new direction, but this situation was handled in the worst possible way.
