I thought that someone would pick Sam up. Kind of surprised by the Grossman release though, he's Kyle Shanahan's number one guy. Nah, it's like Tim Tebow. That kind of media circus is an albatross for the locker room. No it's not, that's absurd. Literally all it takes is throwing him out there for one play, and 90% of the story goes away. It's just about him getting a chance in the NFL, if even for one play during the regular season. The exact same thing happened with Jason Collins last year. He came onto the court, got a huge standing ovation and a top story on Sportscenter or whatever. The next few times he came on the court? Complete and utter non story. Plus, teams employed Perrish Cox for several years after he pretty clearly got away with rape and seemed just fine with it. The Ravens are going to keep Ray Rice on.

The Ravens are only keeping Ray Rice because it would cost us more money to cut him than keep him on the team. He's likely gone after this season, but that was in the cards long before his legal troubles. As for Cox, I'll point out that 49ers brass finds violent criminals to be a more stabilizing element than gay people...which says a lot about how ass-backwards that team is run. But Michael Sam is a depth player. There's so many of those out there, and so many who are guaranteed to be less of a disturbance for the team and the locker room. Keeping that in mind, why even bother? Does anyone want the potential several weeks of distraction that could knock their team off the rails? And there will be, because unlike Collins, Sam is a heavily hyped player and a new arrival to pro sports. That's the difference between the two.

The thing is about Sam is that he was very close to making the team. If Ethan Westbrooks didn't play the way he did he would been on the team. Westbrooks just out played him, which says a lot because Sam did play good. Sam should have been signed by someone and I think it's said the so called media distractions and stuff is a reason. It comes down to this, I ask the question does it really matter when it comes down to better your team to winning?
I ask the hypothetical what if lets say Adrian Peterson or Peyton Manning where gay and I know they are not but lets just say for the sake of this situation. Would you not sign them knowing that but they are as good as they are? No, you sign them because you know they will help you win. You have to be a moron to pass them up if you had the chance. Now I'm not Sam is Peterson or Manning as a player but on DF he can become a great part of a defense.

There's a giant loophole in the new domestic violence policy, if accused players invoke the so-called "Johnny Rule":
Apparently, you cannot be suspended if you add "O Hai Mark"

There's other people who are a lot less risky. If you're a coach, and you get him on your team, and your team loses its first several games and there's any word of locker room instability, the heat is going to be on you as the media speculation rises. Then your team blames you, and you risk the likelihood of getting canned, for what? A mid-level defensive player? That's not how it will play out, necessarily, but that's how it can play out. It's a gamble that most organizations aren't willing to take. Less distractions, less headache, less media hounding, less blame games. It's not a tough choice here. Sidenote: I wouldn't sign Adrian Peterson no matter what he is.

It's pretty stupid if teams don't want the media swarm that comes with signing Sam or in the past Tebow, but they're willing to keep guys that are constantly in trouble with the law. What's more of a distraction, a high media presence or guys getting suspended because they're too goddamn dumb to follow simple rules and live like responsible adults?

I don't understand why some teams wouldn't want the Media Coverage + Money that would come with Signing Sam, and Tebow. I have no clue why Jacksonville never signed Tebow.
1. No one cares about the Jags so a little media would have helped.
2. ALOT of Tim's fanbase is in Florida as he is from there an won College Titles there.
3. They didn't have an arguably better QB at the time, and really still don't (Unless Bortles surprises, which he could)
4. Jerseys = $$$
Really thought it was stupid all around and as it's shown, the Jaguars are in the same shit position they were before so, honestly why not take the chance and get a little popular? What are you Jacksonville, the NFL Hipsters?

Like I just said though, it's more than a media swarm. There's a stigma that can cost you your job. Having idiot criminals on your team doesn't get you scapegoated if you're a coach.

I don't really buy it. Firstly the GM would be involved in signing the player as well and secondly, it doesn't make sense to take a chance on a headcase/criminal player and not on a guy that is(as far as I know) a good person who just happens to have a lot of media presence that is out of his control. It's really easy to say that the guy is just a mid-level player now, but there have been tons of guys to come through the league that came in as mid-level players and became All-Pro's once they got a chance. That's not to say that Sam will do that, but it's just that one never knows. The dude should at least get a shot somewhere, after all it's the NFL and its state-controlled media that is causing the media swarm/potential distractions around Sam anyways.

For general managers that deal with all types of media coverage and what not, it's hilarious & deeply hypocritical that Michael Sam is a "distraction."

I think that the 9ers will fall off with the defensive suspensions and so forth, and if Kaepernick goes down SF is boned hard. I see no reason why Seattle won't make it back at the moment though. That said, it won't surprise me if neither of them are there come NFC CG time.

My bold prediction of the year is that Green Bay is either going to lose pathetically or win by a comfy margin on Thursday Night.

For general managers that deal with all types of media coverage and what not, it's hilarious & deeply hypocritical that Michael Sam is a "distraction." I honestly think general managers and front office types are hiding behind the defense that a perceived "media circus" invading their locker room, because it's easier to say that than it is to say "Michael Sam is not that good." I wanted Sam to make the Rams and break barriers, but he didn't, because the Rams are loaded at the position he plays and he got beat out by an undrafted free agent. And that's fine. He wasn't cut because he was a distraction, he wasn't dropped because he was pontificating his views, he wasn't released because his sexual preference bothered his teammates. He got cut because he was probably the 54th-best option for a 53-man roster. It sucks, but that's the way the NFL works for fringe players like Sam. I still think he will find a home on a practice squad or NFL roster, because he played well enough in the preseason to prove his worth, but at the same time, it's fine if he doesn't, as long as GMs and coaches are honest about him - that there are other players on their roster or free agents on the street who are better football players than he is. As for the "media circus", were things really that batty at Rams training camp? Were reporters from global news outlets busting down Jeff Fisher's door for access during and after preseason games? I feel like I heard nary a peep out of St. Louis during the entire summer, with the exception of one or two stories here or there. Yes, on the first day Sam makes an NFL roster, that team will be inundated with cameras and reporters, but as Rams training camp proved, after about a week, that attention will quiet and the media will move on to cover the next big story of the day.

Titans signed K Ryan Succop, formerly of the Chiefs, to a one-year contract.
Profootballtalk reports suspended Browns WR Josh Gordon is still considering a lawsuit.

Along with all this when you are down there at that end of the roster you need to bring alot more to the table then "pass rusher with a motor". The guy played pretty decent against 2nd and 3rd string guys. If he was top 2 depth quality he would have been mentioned alot more then he was when he was on the field. He wasn't out there making plays on special teams either. When you are at the end of the roster like that gotta do things like excel on special teams, cause odds are you aren't going to see any snaps at your regular position during the season. The "distraction" or "disruption" excuse is really just a roundabout way of saying "he's not a top 53 player" without burying him. He's decent, but what he does decent alot of other players do better than him, and he brings nothing else to the team.
