So I want to get into comics. The only comics I have ever read are Joss Whedon inspired comics like Buffy Season 8, Angel After the Fall, and the Serenity comics. So not knowing much about comics, where do I start? I'll be happy to check out anything. Superheroes, sci fi, whatever, I just want some good suggestions on where to begin.

Well, if you want good superhero, I'd recommend Marvel's new stuff like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk - especially if you like a strong female protagonist like Buffy.
Also, Image Comics' SAGA is pretty successful in in the trades. Other Image books to check out
If you're into police/detective procedural books: THE FUSE If you're into horror type books: GHOSTED or REVIVAL If you're into fantasy book with a funny edge: SKULLKICKERS or RAT QUEENS (Rat Queens is one of my top 3 right now) If you're into long-form, LOST-type mysteries: MORNING GLORIES. If you're into shows like Hannibal with serial killers: NAILBITER

Matt Fraction's current Hawkeye series is awesome, and it'd be really easy to catch up on. Volumes one and two are out now in trade paperback, and volume three isn't out until October. If you enjoy witty writing about snarky heroes dealing with every day problems (and no so every day problems), that book is for you.
On a related note, Scott Snyder's Batman series, also easily found in trade form. I've been reading Batman my entire life, and this run is up there with my favorite of all time. If you enjoy the Batman character from movies/cartoons/video games/whatever, this one is a no-brainer. Definitely read it.

Current Stuff
Saga Letter 44 Superior Foes Of Spider-Man Hawkeye (Matt Fraction's run) Afterlife With Archie Red Sonja (Gail Simone's run) Rat Queens IDW Transformers IDW TMNT IDW Ghostbusters She Hulk (Charles Soule's run) Invincible
Older Stuff
Any Classic Marvel stuff by Lee, Ditko, Kirby, etc. Claremont's X-Men Anything by The Luna Bros. Death and Return Of Superman storyline Batman Knightfall storyline Geoff John's Green Lantern run Y: The Last Man Preacher Sandman Alan Moore's Swamp Thing
And a bunch of people are going to recommend Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, and Year One. None will ever live up to the expectations people will give you for them.

Y: The Last Man, Saga, and The Walking Dead are very easy to find in trade paperback. Also, very easy to get into because they are so great.
As for more well-known stuff, I suggest picking a few characters that interest you, do some research, and jump in. That's how I did it and it worked. Wikipedia and asking questions here will be your best friends for needed information.

I would recommend Grant Morrison's Animal Man. Also I would like into his run on Batman and The Justice League. For current stuff that hasn't been mentioned I would look for The Manhattans Project. The Current Brian Azzarello Wonder Woman is also worth checking out. Also if you're into Mega Man the Archie comics series is worth looking at it's just a great comic all round.

I'd hit up your local library. Odds are they have a ton of stuff. Borrow some, and see what you like out of it.

Current stuff
The Walking Dead Superior Foes of Spider-man (but I think to appreciate this you really need a past understanding/liking for the characters and Spider-man universe)
Past stuff
I can't recommend Ultimate Spider-man, the first run enough. Same with Ultimate X-Men. Perfect two series for newcomers to comics imo.

I'll echo the choices of Numero99 and add a few of my own.
-Transmetropolitan: a Hunter S. Thompson expy in a bizarre future saves america with journalism, and a gun that makes people shit their pants. Warren Ellis' magnum opus. my favorite comic. -100 Bullets: a man gives you a dossier explaining who ruined your life and a hundred bullets that can't ever be traced back to you. what do you do with that information? a must read for lovers of neo-noir storytelling and conspiracy theories -Chew: Tony Chu can see the entire history of everything he eats. off-the-wall conspiracy comedy involving food, cannibalism and a truly badass robotic chicken. my favorite book that's currently being published. -Scalped: Dash Badhorse returns to the rez he abandoned as a teenager as a mole for the FBI to bring down its corrupt chief. but does he even want to do that, and should he? gritt-as-hell noir-western that I strongly recommend if you like 100 bullets -Bedlam: Fillmore Press was a psychopath of the worst kind. then a doctor fiddled with his mind so he wouldn't be. now he's the only thing that can save his city from others just like him. gripping but prepare to feel a little violated, probably the darkest book in my collection. -Superior Foes of Spider-man: some of Spider-man's more loserish foes try and repeatedly fail at being supervillains. funny as hell. -Sleeper: a military agent infiltrates a cartel of supervillains for his government only for his handler to get put in a coma. now he has to pretend he's a supervillain full time and we see just how far he'll go to protect his cover and complete his mission. -Batman: The Black Mirror: probably the best "Dick Grayson as Batman" story. a must-read for fans of Year One and The Killing Joke. -Stormwatch: Specifically Warren Ellis' take on the team. the U.N. sponsored super-team deal with serious threats to global security while also dealing with the labyrinth political minefield that goes with being the world's premier super-team. -Planetary: Warren Ellis again; a team of "archaeologists of the unknown" study the past of the Wildstorm comic universe, which ends up being a loving homage to pretty much every kind of genre fiction you can think of, while deconstructing and reconstructing those same concepts. also, the bad guys are an EXTREMELY thinly veiled version of a certain family of superheroes owned by Marvel.

If you're a Whedon fan, check out the first 24 issues of Astonishing X Men, he had a great run on it.

Hmmmm
For good military style Sci fi try out some of the collections of Alien Legion. For horror Hack/Slash is fun. For just wacky comedy Yeah! by Peter Bagge and one of the Hernandez brothers is great. For WWII military stuff try out the Showcase Presents Unknown Soldier trade.

Totally agree with the above two. Had heard how good the Ellis Stormwatch run was. Then got all but one of the trades for $3 each. Read all of them in one sitting. Planetary is amazing. So happy I waited until it was over to read it. Thought of another,if you can handle ultra violence and very crass material Garth Ennis's "The Boys" is a great "superhero" book.

Top Ten by Alan Moore is an incredible, self-contained 12-issue story. Can't recommend it highly enough.

You can start by not being afraid of the comic book thread. But Alan Moore's physical appearance scares me!!!
