Looks cool, but I'm still really upset by the bullshit that was the last movie.

Looks cool but the Hobbit series has really made me hate the Elves.
They just sap any tension from scenes they appear in by cutting through the Orcs like a knife through butter. I mean, why are we meant to be in suspense or whatever when we know a dozen Elves can show up and wipe out 200 Orcs without breaking a sweat or getting so much as a scratch.
Although to be fair, that's a problem with many movies nowadays. They prefer to go for style, showing "cool"scenes of the heroes kicking everybody's ass rather than tension and suspense of seeing the heroes losing and in danger.

I've enjoyed the trilogy thus far. I will admit to some annoyance at the various tweaks to the plot, but I can see the necessity of them; the book really only bore minimal connection to the Lord of the Rings to follow, and to spread it out to three films they needed to add in.

The helms deep Elves all died.
They still had to appear and shove their ghastly pointed ears into a scene and remove some of the tension. I was keyed up to watch a few hundred old men, farmers, teenagers and a scattering of warriors take on the might of Sarumen. Then the Elves appear looking all high-and-mighty and level the playing field somewhat. Plus that was Lord of the Rings. I didn't like them much in that movie, found most of their scenes to be very boring but I could tolerate them. It's The Hobbit series that is making them unbearable.
For me, the problem of the second movie wasn't so much the gods...er...I mean, "elves." It was that the stupid dwarfs DROVE OUT SMAUG!!!! It begs the question "Where were these 13 assholes the first time Smaug attacked???" They really killed the tension, power, and danger of that dragon with that stupid fight scene. If 13 guys...most of whom are comic relief characters, can beat Smaug's ass easily and drive him out of the mountain, then an entire city of guys should murder him dead with ease! It's like the attack on Lake Town is just going to be Smaug flying towards them: "I will burn you all to the ground!" Bard just looking up and going, "Oh?" Fires his black arrow non-nonchalantly and kills the dragon before he even comes close to the city. Gotta admit that the second movie disappointed me. Yes, the Hobbit is for younger audiences, but these movies feel like they're treating it like it was made for 6 year olds...and that's not the case at all. (I first read it when I was in 7th grade, about 12 or 13...so yeah).

When was it changed from "There and Back Again"? A couple of months ago, probably for the best.

They didn't drive Smaug out though. While I thought that whole sequence had way too much stuff that didn't need to be there, Smaug clearly only left the mountain to destroy Lake Town. If he hadn't he'd have roasted Thorin, Bilbo and co. sooner or later.

The only bad thing is that there won't be enough Smaug.
