Anyone here only care about poker (playing or watching) during its boom period? As in just a bandwagoner and not a regular poker fan.
When it started, I remember a sudden massive increase in advertising for local-area Texas Hold'Em games and wondering what was going on. My initial thought was "What does Texas have to do with anything around here?" I'm in Newfoundland, one of the furthest places away from Texas that's still in North America. Of course I learned afterward that it just happened to be a name for an extremely popular variant of poker. Of course I think Texas itself is pretty cool nonetheless.
I didn't actually play the game much, but I just started getting interested in the TV shows just as the poker fad was on its way out.

I wouldn't say it was a fad. I would say it was a online poker sites boom It was definitely a fad. Multiple Shows based on poker started popping up, and all sorts of Poker merchandise started popping up in random stores. It's popularity are why they had Bond playing it in Casino Royale instead of Baccarat.

I never cared about it, I couldn't get past the idea of it being some kind of competition worthy of being on tv.
I mean people joked about bowling-now I'm supposed to sit and watch a group around a table barely speaking?
My neighbor likes it and plays but I saw some competitors wearing sunglasses and thought it was weak.

My neighbor likes it and plays but I saw some competitors wearing sunglasses and thought it was weak. Some of them do it due to photophobia, which is a legit condition. I have it to an extent. Others, not so much, but it is a great way to hide a poker face.

Having poker on late night TV was both a good way to kill time and get some rest. Other than that, I didn't care much for it.

I never understood why anyone would want to watch it. Who wants to see other people trying to win money in a game of chance? The "best" poker players in the World are still influenced by the deck. It's sooooo boring.

Just another example of "the douche is strong" from the mid 00's.
People that wear sunglasses to play poker piss me right the hell off.

I think it all started when Espn aired the 2003 world series of poker non stop. It taught me how to play the game, so I'm grateful for the fad existing.

Perhaps if I ever got into playing, I might have enjoyed it...but f*** watching it. Seriously, that is outright boring as shit, and even worse there was a period where it was on GSN during a period when GSN was okay to watch...and for that I can say, f*** Poker.
