Okay, I was just picking up dinner when the employees began debating the number of U.S. states. Two of them were convinced there were 52, and I was like "WTF?" They said a lot of people think there are 52, so when I got home, I checked online. Sure enough, some people actually think there are 52 states. Why?  ? Maybe they're confused because of the territories, but that's no excuse. Fifty states should be common knowledge by this point. At least since 1959 when Hawaii became a state. So what the hell is up? Thoughts? |

Looked up on it too. Seems like a good number recall being taught in school (almost all outside the US) that there were 52, with DC and Puerto Rico most often considered states as well.

I guess a lot of people think mainland US is 50 and then count Hawaii and Alaska as 51 and 52. That or they think Guam and Puerto Rico count as states.

I just feel like it should be common knowledge that there are 50 states. As if anyone who thinks there are 52 states should be included in a Buzzfeed list of reasons why humanity is in danger. Like those people who think the 911 phone service was developed after Sept. 11.

I remember having this argument years ago-I think some people believe Canada is a state or something. I forget Puerto Rico even exists most of the time.

I can't speak for everybody, but I know the reason for an old drunk I talked to once (although he thinks 51). You take what there was when he was in school (49) add a new one and get 50. But when he's drunk his mind gets crossed and he adds 1 to 50.
