Rewatching old Raws, I got to the episode that recaps the July 4th slam challenge that concluded when Lex Luger got a special helicopter trip on the way to being put forth as the super American good guy after delivering a radically repetitive promo ("You know what's wrong with America? There's NOTHING WRONG WITH AMERICA! I'll tell you what's wrong with America, PEOPLE LIKE YOU! YOU are the problem with America!") with racial comments (Yeah. I'm not quoting those).
However, lost to history is how the WWF actually were hyping and pushing Crush leading up to the event. Crush was coming off his protected loss at Wrestlemania (THERE'S TWO DOINKS!) and they actually had him beat Bastion Booger (all 450 lbs of him) after bodyslamming the man not one, not two, but three times in a row (I call it the Ezekiel Jackson Special).
At the actual event he was the man who was 'closest' before Luger arrived, getting air on Yoko before dropping to his knees and grabbing his back on his way back to the midcard.
So, I wonder what would've happened if they would have had Crush be the one who stepped up, draped in the American Flag and bodyslam Yoko.
Would his feud have been any worse than Luger's? Would he have won by countout at Summerslam? Would he have (Allegedly) bragged (Allegedly) drunkenly about being (Allegedly) booked to win the (Allegedly) Rumble(Allegedly)?
Yes. My mind is in a random place tonight.

Honestly, I still think Crush could have been a better fit for WWF at the time over Lex Luger. Lex just worked better as a heel and never had much dynamic behind him. Crush could have easily filled that Hogan or Warrior mode of intensity.

He got the crap kicked out of him by a clown. No way he was slamming Yokozuna.

He would have never turned heel, had Luger's push, then gets arrested for having drugs in his car.

It's tough to guess. As a fan of Brian Adams, I would have liked to see how far Crush might have gone with a main event push. He was definitely a fresh face with some cool moves, and his character was more believable than Luger's. I still think Luger would have worked a lot better had Vince not tried to turn him into Captain America. Lex was a good enough personality on his own without needing to make him a one dimensional American Made character (or a Narcissist for that matter).

I thought Crush was pretty good for a big man. He wasn't exactly putting in 5 star classics, but he had a pretty solid moveset. His tilt-a-wirl backbreaker always looked like death.
Always thought an IC title push should have happened

Had Crush DESTROYED Doink at or after WM9, this could've worked. Instead, he didn't - even worse (IMO) Doink distracted him at KOTR '93 and cost him that match with HBK, so they were still in Crush vs. Doink mode....and IIRC, they never booked a real solid finale to that feud either.
Having Crush move relatively quickly from KOTR to the Intrepid, even with or without destroying Doink (yes he was a damn good wrestlin' clown at that point, but he was still a clown), would not have worked.
Almost as bad as turning someone heel all of a sudden and having them become a top Hulk Hogan-esque face.........hey wait...

Lex Luger was going to be a main eventer regardless, he had the WCW main event push to back it up. Crush never was, he was just a mid carder, fan friendly big man who came out of a brief tag team run with Demolition. I couldnt see Yokozuna vs Crush as the Summerslam 1993 Main Event.
Both (would have) sucked to be fair, Luger was a natural heel and it bombed big time and Crush was a horrible worker also, so it would have been pretty grim a year long main event fued with those two.

The real question is whether or not Crush could slam USS Intrepid on the Yokozuna.

He would have flopped much worse than Luger. It would have had the feel of Mabel in 1995.

A spectacularly untalented wrestler, he makes Luger seem like Kurt Angle.
Almost entirely absent of any charisma as well.

He was probably trying to distract the USS Intrepid while his friends smuggled guns or whatever.

I won't argue charisma, but as far as athletic ability, coordination and simple things like throwing punches, Crush was superior to Luger in nearly every way. I say this as a fan of Luger.
