The whole 5th down thing is seriously the worst call in sports. Most all other calls at least had something "in the moment". The 5th down wasn't "in the moment". It wasn't a bad judgement call. It wasn't a "oh my god what did I just do but I can't go back and fix it." It was flat out bullshit. There's a god damn break between plays. There were many people involved in how shitty it went down. Every member of the ref team allowed it to happen.
it would be akin to randomly giving a basketball player another free throw after a timeout with 5 seconds left in the game for no reason without a single ref stopping to ask WTF the going on. It would be like an extra penalty kick/shot out of the blue.

I think the Don Denkinger call in the 1985 World Series should be ranked ahead of the Jim Joyce/Armando Galarraga call from 2010. Galarraga's "perfect" game was indeed one for the history books, but it was a regular season game and the call didn't affect who won and lost. Denkinger's call, on the other hand, may very well have turned the tides in the Royals' favor on their way to a championship. In terms of how badly each umpire missed their calls, each one was equally bad. Someone also mentioned the Braves-Pirates 19-inning game from July 2011, which ended when Julio Lugo "scored" on a ground ball to shortstop. Even as a Braves fan, after I analyzed this play to death, I believe Lugo was out and the Pirates got screwed. Jerry Meals was having a bad night behind the plate and he made one more travesty of a call to get out of there. That Vinny Testaverde phantom touchdown doesn't seem to get mentioned enough in these discussions these days, nor does Jerry Rice's should-have-been fumble from that year's playoffs. And neither does the most egregiously blown call in Super Bowl 40: The "illegal block" call against Matt Hasselbeck when he was making a tackle. That kind of call can't be made in a Pop Warner game in small-town Iowa, let alone a Super Bowl. Another NFL one: The Buccaneers got jobbed against the Colts on Monday Night Football in 2003. That "leaping" call was bullshit -- the officials misinterpreted that rule. Simeon Rice was not trying to gain an advantage by jumping onto a teammate's back. Therefore, it's not leaping. And the game wouldn't have even reached that point were it not for a hideous call on an onside kick in the fourth quarter. The Colts clearly touched it before it went ten yards. The "Monday Night Miracle" was merely a sham. And speaking of horrible onside kick calls, we've gone this far without mentioning Oregon vs. Oklahoma from 2006. (Full game at the link.) Not only did Oregon touch the ball before it traveled ten yards, an Oklahoma Sooner recovered it! Yet the Ducks were awarded the ball and scored the game-winning touchdown in the final minute. That's almost up there with Fifth Down as a classic example of a team getting robbed of what it earned. In the NBA, while I'm not much of a fan, even I know the Kings should have been in the 2002 NBA Finals. They had a great chance to win it all too. But we'll never really know.

The ending of the Monday Night Football game in 2012 between the Packers and Seahawks.

In terms of how badly each umpire missed their calls, each one was equally bad. From wiki: You can argue that having 2 runners on changed the outlook, but Sundberg still f***ed up without Orta advancing to third. The Cardinals pitching still allowed for a walk and a single after that. Add to that if the Cardinals allowed the fact that Denkinger was umping home plate get to them, then they deserved to lose. And I say that as a Cardinals fan. That one play didn't do much.

If Denkinger makes the right call, who knows how the Cardinals end up playing? They probably don't lose as much momentum and confidence, and Joaquin Andujar likely doesn't have the meltdown of the decade (in a decade in which John McEnroe was at his peak). The Royals might win the series, but we never really got a chance to see it play out properly. I can see the counter-argument, but that call at first base definitely hit the Cardinals' psyche pretty hard.

The Cardinals were up 3 games to 2 going into game 6 so if the Cards win there is no game 7. Even then Jack Clark shouldn't have missed that fly ball in that inning and the Cardinals should have hit better than .185 in the series. The biggest question isn't how did Denkinger miss that call but how the hell does Vince Coleman get injured by a slow moving tarp?

As much as it pains me to say so:
That should not have been a touchdown.

Oh, and I don't care what anybody says, but the Music City Miracle was a FORWARD PASS. I used to feel that way, but I'm neither a bills or Titans(Oilers fan when they were in Houston tho) fan so it isn't emotional for me. I changed my tune fter I saw a carful analysis on NFL network complete with a geometric representation. That said the easy thing to do for a referee making the call is to flag it and kill it. But if they had the argument would be the other way and we'd still be talking about it anyway and Buffalo would still be without a Super Bowl. The only difference would be we would call the Bills Five time Super Bowl losers. But I'm ICBM and that's just my opinion I actually did a What If Scenario a couple years back, asking what if the Music City Miracle was deemed a forward pass. If I recall correctly, I think I had it as St. Louis vs. Jacksonville in the Super Bowl, with St. Louis crushing them.

Gold medal game should've been number 1. Those players still never bothered to pick up the silvers.

I can see the counter-argument, but that call at first base definitely hit the Cardinals' psyche pretty hard. If any team collapses after a single call that doesn't really directly effect them, then they deserve to lose. No team should collectively "collapse". The Royals won the game fairly. They weren't undeserving of winning.

I just saw the computer analysis of the Music City Miracle and that pretty much confirms it was a lateral. I'd thought that way anyway. It sure looks like a forward pass on first glance because Wycheck was behind the line with Dyson in front of it. But the ball leaves Wycheck's hand just in front of the line, which is where Dyson catches it.
The analysis is at the very end of this video:

While it certainly wouldn't be the worst call in history, I'm always reminded of the 2009 (I think?) LSU/Alabama game. The refs screwed up a crucial interception that eventually went on to cost LSU the game.
Also, as a Braves fan, the 'Infield Fly' game will always haunt me. It was such a bullshit call and a horrible way for Chipper Jones to go out.

I dunno how remembered it is but AJ Pryzinski running to first on a strikeout against the Angels won the game for the White Sox and eventually led to them winning that series. As an Angels fan, I still crab about that series in general. That was the first time I really felt like the umps were deciding who would win a game more than the players. Ball hit the dirt. Replays show it and Josh Paul (former Sox catcher) didn't bother to tag him. That's his dumb fault. If there is ANY DOUBT whether that ball hit the dirt, you tag the runner to cover your ass. Besides, Buerhle Garland Garcia Contreras All complete game victories that led to the pennant.

Bret Hull scored, the Stars won the cup. The Sabres never did. End of discussion What the hell does that even mean? While, yes, both of your statements are true how does that negate it being a terrible call? I'm genuinely curious because I have never seen anyone argue that it was the correct call. It clearly was not, especially after a season where the skate in the crease rule was so heavily enforced.

The Watford vs Reading ghost goal.
The Liverpool vs Sunderland Beach Ball goal should have been disallowed.
I'm not sure it's a bad call per se but I'll still mention Graham Poll booking the same player three times.
The Lampard one is interesting as it actually led to a rule change.

You could fill a top 10 list with Howard Webb reffing Man Utd games alone.
They didn't call him Man Utd's 12th man for nothing
