radio.com/2014/08/19/nfl-coldplay-katy-perry-rihanna-pay-play-2015-super-bowl-halftime/It used to be the other way around, but now.... The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the considered acts for this season’s Super Bowl are being asked “if they would be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financialcontribution, in exchange for the halftime gig.” I see their point, but this is kinda like a holdup-they should have set this in motion right from the start, not after it became bigger than the game itself. I'm not sure how they are doing financially, at the end of it all, but they do command BIG bucks for every commercial, but this sounds greedy. What do you think, FAN?

This is one of those things where I understand why the NFL thinks they can get people to pay to be on the Halftime Show... but come'on man.
It's just one of those things that sounds scummy even if it isn't.

It's a good idea if they can get somebody to actually pay them for it.

Can't really blame NFL for trying to get money since that's their main goal as an organization but it's pretty asinine.
Though I can almost guarantee some record company would pay to hype their act, maybe in lieu of a commercial.

It's in no way bigger than the game itself. They could put literally anything in that spot: a marching band, a magician, a mic-ed up Casio in a chair, and people would watch because it's the Superbowl and they're already watching.
That said, it's a dumb move; but it's certainly not cuz they're hurting for money.

Or some kid choir singing "God Bless america" that way, we'll have all 3 big patriotic anthems on the same telecast (Absent for the past 2 Wrestlemanias America the Beautiful and Our National Anthem are the other 2 big patriotic anthems)

wrong. nobody has EVER played the Super Bowl for pay, it's always been done for free by the artists.

I understand it from the NFL perspective, even if it comes off as awful. Someone will pay to do it, and with the amount of exposure (especially if a new album or tour is set) the artist will make back everything that is paid in. If he had to, I'm pretty sure Bruno Mars would have paid the NFL something last year if his album sales post Super Bowl stayed what they were. He made a ton from performing for free.

Good. Maybe this will get rid of halftime shows all together. Yes, I don't like them and I view them as a giant waste of time.

What's the point of even having half time in an American football game anyway?
There are so many stoppages, they may as well just continue to play until the end.

It's f***ing stupid and offensive that a League with that much clout on their biggest money-earning day of the year can take music for granted like that. Further, even asking for it sets a horrifying precedent for the industry and public perception of music. We've finally gotten to a point where people are willing to actually pay for music again, and this ridiculous entitled bullshit just enforces the "you musicians are LUCKY I even listen to you, I shouldn't have to pay you, you owe me" mentality.

Coldplay sounds like one of the most boring halftime shows I could possibly imagine.

Dumb idea, but even dumber if artists/record companies actually pay up. What's the point of even having half time in an American football game anyway? There are so many stoppages, they may as well just continue to play until the end. Same reason other sports have a halftime. So that teams can retool their strategies. It isn't just about resting players.

How much is it and can we start a kickstarter to get Weird Al on?

Honestly, they could double down on the commercials and get their money that way.

From a business point I never got why they have to pay for music. It's free advertising
