I don't get why the Janetty is used as an insult, I can think of many Janettys who went on to have pretty good careers post break up.
Like for instance, The Hardy Boyz: Matt went on to win the US Title, the ECW title and the Tag Titles, Edge and Christian: Christian went on to win the Intercontinental title 4 times, The Tag Titles 2 times, the European title, the ECW title 2 times, and the World Heavyweight Title twice.
And for a weird ROH example Future Shock: Although O'Reilly is definitely the Janetty, he's definitely proven himself a much better Tag competitor than his partner.
So I don't get why there is such a stigma to being called the Janetty.

It's because the reality is that most popular tag teams don't have a "Jannetty", yet people are always quick to label the guy with less success as such. Matt Hardy had a ton of success in WWE, not a "Jannetty". Same goes for Christian. Marty Jannetty had so little success in comparison to Shawn, and it happened almost immediately. Like I said, that rarely happens with popular tag teams.
The only true Jannetty I can think of in recent memory is Curt Hawkins. Zack Ryder took off and became a popular midcard act with featured matches on ECW, and later a face turn, US Title run, segment with Hugh Jackman, and a decent amount of merch. Curt Hawkins fell off the face of the Earth.

Can't call O'Reilly the Jannetty when he is the current PWG World champion and ROH tag team champion. But being called the Jannetty is suppose to mean that guy's former tag partner when on to being a superstar while he fades into obscurity. That works if ignore Jannetty's career post Rockers.

Yeah but Matt Hardy's success compared to Jeff Hardy's and it's no contest.
Same thing with Christian to Edge...
that's what the Jannetty generally means... becuase even Jannetty had a pretty decent career... but his tag partner was Shawn Michaels and compared to that it's really nowhere as impressive.

It's too late. The idea of 'The Jannetty' is too well-known now. Why was it 'the Jannetty' and not 'the Neidhart?' Who knows, but it's too late now.

I thought there was a real-life element to the "Jannetty insult," reflecting his outside-the-ring problems. If it didn't start that way, I've always assumed it worked its way into it.
Also I do understand why it's unfair to use in other tag teams. After HBK put him thru the window Marty jumped thru the window, he vanished. For about a year. That doesn't normally happen. The tag team guys usually feud for a bit and then (in certain instances, and over time) one does really well and the other does not/eventually vanishes.

Yes, but Matt Hardy and Christian still have HOF-worthy careers in WWE. They were prominent characters in the company for over a decade apiece, and very popular with fans. Marty Jannetty just turned into an absolute non-factor.

For me, being the jannety isn't being a failure, just that you are not as succesfull as tour tag partner
Jeff was way more succesfull than Matt, Edge was way more succesfull than Christian, Miz was way more succesfull than Morrison, and the list goes on.
Even with the dudley boyz when one could say that both had similar success, one could say that bubba had a better career than dvon, even though some people will think that being the TNA champion isn't an accomplishment that big

I'd assume it was because of their situation- the Rockers had a really famous breakup, but the Hart Foundation didn't ever have a famous breakup angle (with Bret and Neidhart merely not teaming as often anymore).

I remember saying "He's the Marty Jannetty of the team" back before I ever heard anybody else say it. I'm not claiming that I started it, but I never intended it to be insulting toward the target, but merely to imply that he was the guy who would be left behind by his tag partner.... which I guess is kind of insulting.

I feel that rather than proving Matt and Christian's successes the OP just serves to illustrate how little those titles mean/meant. A sad indicator of how devalued all of those titles were.

If TNA made more of an impact (no pun intended) I would call it the "Chris Harris"

Lots of indie guys would die to be a former IC and tag champ in the WWF even though those reigns weren't too great.

The term is overblown, because people like to remember Jannetty's career being a lot worse than it was. If you count it as "The person of a tag team who had the less notable career" then it's all tag teams except the team that failed together and never had a tag run.
I think it just leads to a lot of undeserved assumptions, like if Shad was the jannetty of crime tyme, then the HBK of the team went on to job on superstars and not appear for months. There is probably a better term, but it's ingrained in the culture of wrestling fans.

Janetty didn't suck but wasn't great. He just had the worst luck when his chosen partner went on to be arguably one of the top five wrestlers in history. {Spoiler}Leif Cassidy

They really weren't that great, namely because they were smack in the middle of the New Generation Era. That aside, and I speak only for myself, but those reigns were more memorable than Matt Hardy's US or ECW titles and several of Christian's reigns as well. Back in Jannetty's time, it was a huge accomplishment to win the I-C title one single time. Today (broken record alert), those belts are passed around so much that 3-5 reigns is not really that remarkable.

It's so silly, Shawn Michaels had arguably one of the top 5 or 10 careers of any pro wrestler ever. And Jannetty is somehow a punchline because he didn't surpass THAT?

I just wanted to point out he wasn't exactly Bret Hart with the IC title or Demolition with the tag belts before someone made the argument against me that his reigns weren't great.

Why was it not the Neidhart? Marty did better than Jim.

I'd say it's more because The Rockers had the big angle with Shawn Michaels turning heel and becoming the Heartbreak Kid whereas The Hart Foundation just split up amicably so Bret could go solo.
