So I have two days to renew my policy for car insurance before it expires and a big part of me is like meh!!!!! Do cops still ask for a license and proof of insurance? Not that I get pulled over regularly far from it as a matter of fact. I know I know but what if you get in an accident!!!! ? I haven't been in any kind of vehicular incident since 2003. I'm a very defensive driver and I get that not all of us are like that but still..... I'm basically giving away $118 a month pretty much for nothing. Thats a nice ass vacation I could be taking myself on every year or so. Grr....... Chris Rock said one time .......... Insurance.... they should call it "in case shit"..... You pay for it in case shit happens....Now if shit doesn't happen shouldn't I get my money back!! ?

$118 a month seems a hell of a lot.
I've no idea how it works in the US but in the UK you usually shop around & find it cheaper. Can you not do that?
My insurance quote came through last month from my provider, £570 for the year. I went online, with the same company & got it for £304
It would've been cheaper too if some clown hadn't written my car off & the insurance company had actually sorted it out

No offense OP but is this a serious question?
Well in case it is, and I see you are in Florida here's some info off a site for you.
Florida Insurance Requirements.
Florida is a “no-fault” insurance state. Under both its Financial Responsibility and No-Fault laws, vehicle owners are required to carry the minimum amounts of $10,000 for property damage liability (PDL) and $10,000 for personal injury protection (PIP). You must have coverage in place before you obtain your registration and tags, and you must continue to carry it throughout the registration period. If you intend to drop your insurance, for any reason, you are required to surrender your plates before the insurance expires. If you do not and your insurance lapses, then…
Penalties in Florida for a first time offender with no insurance.
Upon the lapse of your Florida auto policy, your insurance carrier is required by law to immediately notify the state. The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will in turn notify you to provide proof of new coverage. If you fail to provide this new proof, your license, plates and registration will be suspended for up to three years. Once this suspension is in place, you will have to provide the state with proof of a new policy and pay a fee of $150 to have your license, plates and registration reinstated.
By the way, that proof of insurance has to show that you had new insurance in place before the old policy was cancelled. If not, your license, plates and registration will be suspended, even if the period of the lapse is one day! In other words, if you were intending to save a little money by going without insurance for a month or two, it’s not going to work.

You either need to find cheaper insurance, or start to bike.

In the St. Louis area they do ask for it and the bigger thing is you need it in order to keep your cars legally registered in most states. When your plates expired you need it. Depending on the car you have and if or not you making payments on it. You can shop around and get a cheaper deal and may not need full coverage which seems like is what you have. I know it sucks but trust me when you do need it, it helps. When I had a tornado damage my car. They did pay out to have it all fixed and I doubt I ever had that kind of money to do it.

"Insurance is the one thing you buy that you hope you never have to use" (blanking on the comedian who said that and I feel bad)
you need to shop around, dude. I pay under $100/mo for my insurance even with a newer car.
In MN they ask for both, but I don't have a physical card most of the time, I print out my proof of insurance and keep it buried someplace in my wallet. What scared me is the one time I did get pulled over the cop looked up my insurance...
It's there to at least get you back together but I think in some parts it IS a ripoff. the only reason I got any money on a car that was totaled in a crash was because it hand under 100,000 miles on it.
Homeowners insurance gets you back where you were before the accident, auto insurance does not. So to a point I agree with you, but it's saved my butt a couple of times from stuff I couldn't prevent (tree through my windshield, vandalism....)

I assume that in the US there is a go compare website which after you enter your car details gives you the cheapest insurance you can get.
I was on a £400+ year then tried this and got it down to £200.
Of course it all depends on what car you drive.

Here in Indiana you have to have insurance for every registered vehicle and every vehicle must be registered and kept licensed, even if you have no intentions of driving it. If it is broken and you are not going to fix it, there are hoops that you have to jump through to get them excluded. That isn't to say that people do not go uninsured, however. I got backed into a couple of months ago by someone who said that he had insurance with Progressive but it turned out that he let that policy lapse at the start of the year.

Young men are considered risky drivers and therefore have more costly rates. Have a bunch of wrecks and/or tickets that reinforces that assumption and they go up even more. To get lower rates, he would need to get good grades in school (responsible students are considered more responsible drivers), get married (men who take personable responsibility for someone else are considered more responsible drivers as well), or simply get older. Once you get to be 25, insurance companies assume that you just might not have your head shoved up your own ass anymore.

It does depend on your type of car.
I remember my sister used to talk about how useless it was to require stuff like car insurance for property damage considering if you really did run your car and damage someone's property, said person could still sue you for damages and win easily in court regardless of if you had any insurance.
I know it's much like how it is in Florida with Louisiana laws and needing car insurance...
In a lot of my experiences (and from what I hear from family in law enforcement), it's not all that serious with people suspending licenses for years over a one day lapse or anything like that. The systems they have are a year or two behind because they just don't have the type of money and manpower to keep them up-to-date like that over something like everybody's car insurance.
Much like a lot of that type of police work, it's hardly ever considered a priority...until it is.
People who were in the know actually used insurance cards with up-to-date coverage dates but actually weren't insured. Again, the systems aren't up-to-date so our police can't really tell most of the time. I was never that bold because there's way too many things that could happen to a black dude being pulled over by the cops for no reason in Louisiana.
It's one of those things that if you have a relatively clean record, nobody will care either way. Though it is important to have that shit together for your car when you have to renew your license or plates...and I'm sure it helps if your car explodes or melts under the sun.
You know what's really useless? Inspection stickers.
$10-$20 here every year or two just to see if all the shit you need to drive regularly works (arguably) for the 10 minutes it takes for the inspection. The thing too is as stupid as I swore this was, I was sure that since the car shops' cut from that fee is only about a dollar I must've been railing for no reason. Surely the rest of the money goes to things like funding public transportation or the upkeep of our roads and bridges, right?
Nope, but hey...this is Louisiana. I don't know why I expected shit like that to make sense.

I've been in this spot before. I carry enough insurnace that those reserves have to be exhausted before someone can sue. And even then, if they accept money from the insurance company there's something in that that keeps them from suing.

I'm surprised insurance is so expensive in Florida. I thought everything was cheap there.
I know people who have claimed residence in Pennsylvania and New Jersey so they can get insurance 10 times cheaper than what they would pay in New York.

Have I ever mentioned that I have a desire to inflict bodily harm on the masterminds of Geico's advertising department? The General really pisses me off. When I first had to get my own auto insurance I called them because I see their commercial like every other commercial break so I called them.......... The representative told me they don't cover Florida.

I pay around $60/month for my Avalon and around $10/month for my 84 Camaro.
Dad's car recently got thrashed by a major hailstorm. Cost $19,000 to fix. Only had to pay $500 for the whole thing.

Doesn't matter how good a driver you are if someone hits you.
Rates that high sounds like you've had tickets or something.
