It's for charity according to Dean Ambrose, but how on earth does it benefit a charity?
All I'm seeing on facebook is a feed full of videos of people throwing water on themselves. No mention of what charity it is for or how it even benefits the charity.

Some people do it wrong, but many/most of the ones I have seen mentioned the charity, which is to help combat Lou Gehrig's disease.

I don't know. I just donate money. Doesn't need to get more complicated than that.

79.7 million has been raised since July 29th, compared to 2.9 mil. during the same time period last year, and only 64 million during all of 2013. It's led to an increased knowledge of the disease, and that's led to a larger amount of donations.

I mean, the videos themselves don't really amuse me but it's made a ton of money for it's cause. Why get upset at something that's actually doing some good in this world, no matter how much you don't "get it"?
I'm not even trying to single the OP out, I've just noticed people complaining about this and can't help but wonder why.

Like, people who feel the need to just shit on everything popular so they look smart. I heard a girl I know literally say "I'll bet half these people don't even know what Lou Garret's disease is.". There are no words...

I think he's asking how it actually benefits a charity. Its basically a chain letter type thing but with a meme that celebrities do.
So they do it, challenge 3 celeb friends and all us norm-o's do it too because our favorite celebs are doing it. Awareness rasied.
But the idea is you're supposed to donate $100 to ALS then do the challenge and not just do the ice water.
Its a good cause, but sometimes the gimmick of it all overshadows that people are supposed to donate money and not just dump water on themselves.

Some people do it wrong, but many/most of the ones I have seen mentioned the charity, which is to help combat Lou Gehrig's disease. Yes, it is for ALS. That is the reason that all of the big wigs at the MDA did the challenge as well (ALS is one of the many neuromuscular disorders that the MDA funds research for alongside the many forms of muscular dystrophy). The only thing I don't know is if the money from the challenge goes towards research or towards care of the afflicted. For example, the MDA does many different forms of fund raising. The money from the telethon goes towards research (to great effect, I believe. Recent research suggests that they can double the life expectancy of Duchenne's patients with a new treatment). Local fundraising efforts like the Shamrocks and the Pass the Boot fundraisers put on by local fire departments raise money that goes towards the long term care of the locally afflicted (along with a fairly sizable program for donating building materials from Lowes, since making homes wheelchair accessible is horribly difficult and expensive).

Tell me where I was shitting on people who want to know about this. Please. Tell me how that applies to @graant in this thread? Wasn't talking about the OP. I'm talking about people who are blatantly dismissive of the project even while knowing the facts, and find any way they can to put it down.

Tell me where I was shitting on people who want to know about this. Please. Tell me how that applies to @graant in this thread? Maybe you need to take a step back and read where he agreed that none of what was said was directed at the OP. How about calm down and stop taking shots at people just because you don't like them or what they say. I'm sick of seeing this crap when reading and understanding what is said would solve the damned issues before they start.

The idea of these videos is that the people who don't want to do the ice bucket challenge will donate $100. And the "proper" videos give out the ALSA website info to donate. I get a weird feeling, though, that the insinuation of these videos is that the people making the videos aren't donating - many are, though, but they don't really make a big deal about that part. That said, this meme has done a helluva job. As of this past Sunday the donations from the last month are in excess of $70mil. (Last year the ALSA saw $2.5mil in donations in the same late July to late August timespan.) Apparently, it's suppose to mimic ALS symptoms, with the ice water being similar to numbness. Good lord this is the first I'm hearing of that part! Like hearing how #BringBackOurGirls was not "hashtag activism" directed at the kidnappers, but at the government of the country where it happened.....

Let's lighten the mood, shall we?
BTW, this video is from the Youtube account of Jonathon Johnson, so either he was involved in shooting this video or someone who had the seemingly random name simply reposted it.

It is pretty gimmicky, but it's definitely worked.

It's goofy, yeah, but with so many different causes and charities out there fighting for attention and donations, you kinda need something like this to raise awareness.
