With some stuff that has been happening the past week, I was wondering this question.
Do you guys think that video game journalists or reporters should live up to some sort of moral or ethic code. I.E. not being in a friendship or relationships with developers in case there may be some bias or conflict of interest. What about said reporters helping to fund games through kickstarter or patreon. Would giving them money and then giving said game good coverage or even a good review score be seen has a conflict of interest.

Personally?
I think any reviewer of media should, if they're being written as an unbiased review, disclose if they're involved with someone involved in production of the product being reviewed.
For Instance: Game Informer has NEVER shied away from disclosing they were owned/underwritten by GameStop and admitted that accusations of bias may have merit when dealing with a story related to used games/retail. They've actually been mostly unbiased on the matter, but the disclosure is a good show.

Yes, they want to be taken like serious journalists then they should follow the same guidelines.

I read an article recently about there being knowledge of video game companies paying people with YouTube channels to do the let's play videos/reviews and talk positively about the game regardless of whether it was good or not. Does that actually happen? I know there is a difference between one who plays games and films the footage and someone who writes for a website/magazine, but then again if they are both being paid, is there a difference?

No. A single review is very rarely if ever the sole reason behind something selling. With the ludicrous amount of video game review sites, video game communities, Let's Play channels and general word of mouth a single biased review changes nothing. A journalists private life shouldn't be put up for the world to see, just so little Jimmy can decide if this review of a new shooty-bang game is solid.

If journalism was limited to reviews I suppose your sentiment has merit. However, if you want to call yourself a journalist, or describe yourself as being in that field, or as a critic, then it does matter.

Yes, they SHOULD have ethics....
But let's be real, for the most part they don't.
Game journalism is corrupt as hell.

In that case I want all of you to do me a favor and look information about something called Quinnspiracy. Basically over the last week a major scandal has developed regarding sites like Kotaku and Polygon being tied to some of the more major indie game developers and unfair practices regarding their reviews and reporting. Now if you believe some people this thing is about the harassment of a woman, but I am here to tell you truthfully and honestly that this is not about that. What it is about is helping to inform people to some of the corruption that plagues these sites. Also just tonight alone, some of these same people have sent death threats and harassment towards JonTron and I have even seen a couple of them tell a 10 year old boy to "eat crap."

Why can't we have a discussion about this. I don't care about Zoe Quinn, but do care about what is happening here. There is a lot of evidence of not only corruption but also immature harassment. Can we really not talk about this in any way shape or form. From what I see none of this is political and has yet to get violent or nasty.

Okay like I said I don't want to talk about Zoe Quinn but instead about what is happening to the video game journalists.

At the very least Microsoft got caught red handed doing it.

The problem is the discussion WILL eventually circle back to talking about Zoe Quinn and once it goes down that road.....well let's just say the last few months have given me little faith that a thread talking about someone like Zoe Quinn would stay open for long.

I for one will say nothing on the matter. What I will say is that Adam Sessler stepping out of criticism sucks, as we lost an honest voice. Same with Ryan Davis passing. I do trust Giant Bomb as they seem to have integrity and often to talk about their industry friends, and when said friends' project fails, they call them on it. I also trust Greg Miller and Colin Moriarty at IGN. The rest of the site can be pretty awful, but those dudes seem to be stand up, and Greg has often talked about journalistic integrity (likely because he went to school for it). It is hard to trust a site/magazine. But there are good individuals out there, who use ethics and integrity.

It'd be easier to research this if most of the sites creating the storm around it weren't taking 4chan and Reddit as unbiased sources, which is kind of an automatic disqualification when it comes to being useful.
