Now, we know that this trope is usually pointed at for causing shows to go downhill. But when did it work? Either generally or for just your tastes? And which ones do you think weren't that bad?
To me, the best replacements include: Mary Millar as Rose on Keeping Up Appearances; Julie (Judy Flynn) as the new secretary on Brittas Empire; Brick's voice from pre-puberty to post on The Middle ;-); Ray Combs on Family Feud (and pretty much everyone after Louie Anderson on the current version); Tom Kennedy on Password Plus; Aubrey Anderson-Emmons as Lily on Modern Family (a change would be needed to have the character age, but this one was because the original twins were pulled out of acting); and Susan Roman taking over for Linda Feige as Melissa on The Raccoons.

First I thought of was Sarah Chalke on Roseanne... followed by them going back to the original actress for Becky ... and having random nods that the actress changed. That wasn't really the same, though. That was a running gag that endeared itself to the show and allowed for funny gags/jokes. The producers knew that the first Becky would be starting college and would return to the show when she could, so the second one was basically just a 'stand-in'. Hence, the jokes and gags. |

Okay, now that I revived this thread and see that not all of them were same character, different actor/actress, let me add: - The Avengers lineups stayed solid. Most notably when Cathy Gale got replaced by some other lady, Emma something or other. And Tara King WAS NOT THAT BAD. Purdey and Gambit get a pass cause I really like Joanna Lumley. I guess Gareth Hunt goes for the ride. - Ziva and Kate = equally interesting on NCIS. - Adam West replaces Olan Soule as Batman's voice on Superfriends as it came to the Super Powers era. People will have a soft spot for Soule because of nostalgia, and he was a bit better in Filmation, but when SF neutered Bats and others with the "no fighting" rule, Soule Batman seemed to become more and more of a nerd. - Doesn't quite count cause it went from specials to series, but Marvin Goldhar replaces Fred Little as Cedric Sneer on The Raccoons. As time has gone by, the specials Cedric = even more annoying than Sophia Tutu! - Bill Cullen when New York era Pyramid was in syndication. - Case can be made for Georgette and Sue Ann for Rhoda and Phyllis. - Wrestling wise, Stan Lane replacing Dennis Condrey! - Mr. Spooner for Mr. Lucas on Are You Being Served? {Spoiler}{Spoiler}...said no one ever. |

Noel Neill replacing Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane on the Adventures of Superman (Neill had previously played Lane in the serials, but they were an entirely separate continuity).

This might be pretty divisive, but Monica Rial and Colleen Clinkenbeard taking over for Bulma and Gohan, respectively for Dragon Ball Z Kai and the Dragon Ball games.
