Unless I'm missing a joke here, wasn't that Jane Fonda? After a quick google search I'll be damned you're right. All these years I've been a fool. Now I dunno why FAN hates this woman. If Joan Rivers was married to Ted Turner, Barbarella would have been one really scary movie.

It's always a pet peeve of mine when people discredit a comic's jokes as "jokes".
I'm not a fan of Joan Rivers myself. I like gallows humor, but she always seemed to keep her material to be pretty shallow by going for the obvious jokes on soft targets. Plus every incarnation of Fashion Police tends to be one of the worst shows on TV. That all being said, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work is a fascinating documentary.
Also, if you want to see some great unintentional comedy, watch Husker Du's appearence on her talk show. They play the song "Could You Be The One?", sit down for a panel interview, and then close out the show by playing "She's A Woman (And Now He Is A Man)". During the panel interview it is obvious that Joan has no f***ing clue who they are and one point confuses the word "melody" for "medley".

There are so many people in the world I hate and very few of them I wish death upon. She was not one of the latter. Had to read this twice to understand what you're saying. I trust you're not wishing death on her, right?

Joan Rivers is just a silly old lady. Old people say a lot of random shit. I can't believe how bent out of shape some of you guys are about her.
I'm not worried about her per say, but I don't wish ill on her for anything, so I do hope she's able to recover.

Hey, hopefully the gal is okay. But, it's only fair that people make tasteless jokes about this situation.

She's transphobic? Yeah, like others have said, I'd feel bad for her family, but I can't really have much in the way of sympathy for someone who hates others just for being a certain way. She called Michelle Obama a "tranny" and didn't apologize, claiming she was "joking". Which is not only an unfunny "joke", but is factually wrong. That's not really transphobic, just an off color, kind of insensitive attempt at humor. If she refused to hire transgender people to work for her or fired someone simply for being trans, that would be transphobic.

How y'all gonna wish death on anybody? That's f***ed up. Hopefully she's either okay or passes quickly for the sake of her family, it's their emotions that matter here, not ours.

Didn't realize Joan Rivers was so hated. She's a comedy legend and one of few comedians who can make some pretty brutal jokes (because in the end she really is just telling jokes) and actually stand by it. Can't speak for everyone but a lot of people think she's a hypocrite. She makes nasty comments about the appearance of others, yet she's so insecure in her looks, she's spent so much money on plastic surgery and her mouth resembles a puckered anus. I do think she can be very funny and she's not the only comedian who makes a career out of being nasty but she takes it too far sometimes. That is hypocritical, but it's also the heart of stand up comedy: making your own insecurities and neuroses into something funny. She's doing it by projecting on others and being mean as f*** about it, it's funny to some people. I'm not all that familiar with her, but she hardly seems like the type that would talk about how she herself looks fantastic.

I see the heart of stand-up comedy as making people laugh at themselves and the silly things that people do without specifically singling out any individuals or groups.

Well god forbid something serious ever happens to me in my life and word gets back here. That would be a hoot to read through. "Man, his wrestling opinions sucked, and I always thought he had a lousy personality, and honestly he's kind of a sack of shit. Oh yeah, but don't die or anything." Jesus. I'd defend ya. I'd say "Leave him alone, he had to watch Kentucky football. He'll surely go to heaven, he spent every fall in Hell."

There's that, and then there's a sliding scale of meanness, I guess. And some like the mean, some just find it tacky and awful. I'm one of the hypocritical types that thinks everything is fair game but I'm gonna bitch about the ones that offend me anyway, not that there's many. Usually, if it's clever enough, it washes away anything offensive about it and I just appreciate the thought process. Morals and comedy are a strange mix.

Why should it be any different from music or movies? It's expression, there is comedy that's exactly what you describe, and there are comedians like Joan Rivers or Louis CK who will push buttons, nothing's for everyone. Even if all comedians just went on stage and insulted themselves for our amusement chances are they'll hit on something that hurts someone.

If I'm a manic depressive comedian. Even if all comedians just went on stage and insulted themselves for our amusement chances are they'll hit on something that hurts someone. This thread was making me think of Louis CK talking about sticking a straw up his daughter's ass and blowing food into her, and Norm MacDonald telling 30 minute story about him planning to lure a woman into a van with cheese sandwiches so he could murder her and bury her in the woods. Those are terrible, disgusting things, and in the wrong hands would not be funny in the slightest. But they're so skilled that the way they take you there, it's a lot more funny than it is disgusting. Especially Norm, he put so much work into that, and there wasn't even a punchline, it was just a meandering, hilarious story about kidnapping and murder.

Yeah there's something to be said for Louis CK being able to get big laughs saying he masturbated between the two towers falling.
