How y'all gonna wish death on anybody? That's f***ed up. Hopefully she's either okay or passes quickly for the sake of her family, it's their emotions that matter here, not ours. Who is this "y'all" who is wishing death on somebody? Literally no one in this thread.

She called Michelle Obama a "tranny" and didn't apologize, claiming she was "joking". Which is not only an unfunny "joke", but is factually wrong. That's not really transphobic, just an off color, kind of insensitive attempt at humor. If she refused to hire transgender people to work for her or fired someone simply for being trans, that would be transphobic. Every single LGBT news source called her out for it, and more or less told her to screw off, just saying.

Making a joke about something doesn't mean it's who you are.

If heaven forbid Joan passes, is Melissa contractually obligated to go in the hole with her? I can't imagine a (under)world where Melissa isn't clung to her like a pilot fish.

What was Joan Rivers problem with Victoria Principal?

Even though her jokes have caused controversy, this is still someone's mother and grandmother. I do not wish anything worse for her.

I haven't heard of her saying anything offensive, really don't have much exposure to her at all honestly, but hopefully she's alright.

She was married to that guy who owned Dubya Cee Dubya. Seems a lot of FAN haven't forgiven her for nearly putting Vince out of business. Unless I'm missing a joke here, wasn't that Jane Fonda? Yes, that was Jane Fonda. One of the callers to the talk show in the Billioinaire Ted skits was a character named "Jane, from Hanoi".

I am not a fan of everything she does, that she does controversial for the sake of controversial and she was mean about Adele in an age where countless women affect their health and life itself because of beauty standards. And I personally think Frank Marino is a better (and nicer!) Joan Rivers than Joan Rivers is. I am not a fan of "death = instant martyr" either. But yes, I cannot say anything beyond that. BTW has Frank said anything about her hospitalization?
I guess it would help if I knew/was reminded of anything good Joan has done. (yes I am one of those "can't divide the performer and person" people sometimes...) As such, don't misconstrue this as the "wishing death" comments, but somehow it wouldn't seem right that they could save just Joan but no one could save Robin Williams. It's like the nice ones always lose.

Traditional Jewish comedians make fun of everything. Joan Rivers is just one (and one of the oldest) in a very long line of people who follow a school of politically-incorrect, sarcastic griping to take the piss out of anything they can imagine (very often themselves). That doesn't necessarily mean it's funny, or even that you have to like it. I'm not even defending her, but pointing out that a lot of comedians have made their bones doing that basic kind of thing.

Calling Michelle Obama a "tranny" shouldn't even qualify as a joke. Where's the set up? Where's the punchline? Where's the satire or the wit?
It's just a nasty thing to say from a woman who has become less of a "comedian" and more another word beginning with c.

"Tranny" is a pretty bad slur against trans people. Even if Rivers isn't transphobic herself, it's still a transphobic thing to say that's hard to write off as "just a joke."

The funny thing about comedy is that anything can be funny. Rape. Man on women violence. The holocaust. Aspies. I've heard jokes on these subjects and worse that were pretty well done and laugh inducing.
What people fail to do when examining jokes is consider that all comedy is a shtick. George Lopez jokes about the barrio and how tough Mexican life is being poor. Then he goes home to his mansion. Daniel Tosh does the douchebag frat boy gimmick on stage and lives his life like normal when he's not portraying the character he made up. The same goes for Joan Rivers.
Sure, that might not matter if you're offended by jokes regardless of context. But in that case, instead of complaining, find something else that entertains.
If we took everything on face value strictly, then I'd hate to be in the presence of too many people on these boards, as a television show about men in their undies causes such uproar and anger. It makes me wonder how they encounter real life situations such as there being no parking spaces or the elevator not working. Probably depression. And I've met board members, truly nice people as well. I'll bet Joan Rivers would be the same if people looked past the intentional controversial act she plays in the media.
That said, I hope Joan recovers. She's a classic.

We all hate Obama, so it's funny! Seriously, it's less of a joke and more of a rant used by Threadjackers on Huffington's website. For an encore, Joan could have said, "Did you know President Obama is a socialist?" Or something. Stopping before I cross the "no politics" line too much!
