I wouldn't go with The Dread One first I would actually go with Baron Mordo as a first villain, than the Dread One

I'm going to sound like an ass or an idiot (why not both?) here but I thought Joaquin Phoenix died. I don't know WHY I thought that but I've been going the last few years just accepting he had passed. So... well this is pretty good news then. Joaquin Phoenix lives! You're thinking of his brother River Phoenix.

Even better reason he should be the Doc. He's transcended the astral plane!

Nightmare would be a cool villain as well. Regardless I hope we get some weird Ditko dimensions. As was said, a shame Del Toro isn't doing it.

You have the Dread One be Mordo's Thanos the one behind the scenes pulling his strings. I am a huge Doctor Strange fan so this does have me excited

Spo what about Marvel's Lovecraftian horror Shuma-Gorath? Shuma would be hard to introduce because he is an ancient evil, most of the time Strange has encountered Shuma he has needed help to force him back

This news makes me VERY happy. I've always been a fan of his, and Strange needed someone with real screen presence.

Still think Marvel are going to end up in another Edward Norton situation.
I just cant see Phoenix playing ball in a franchise without taking said ball and going home due to his 'artistic beliefs' or some such.

Still wish Del Toro was directing . Me too. I always thought a Del Toro Dr. Strange would be amazing, the man has a visual style that would work so well. As for this possible casting, not quite sure about it but he is a wonderful actor.

He's a crackpot but a hell of a thespian that looks the part well-enough, solid hire IMO.

On a related note, how many of you marked out when they dropped his name in Winter Soldier?

Joaquin Phoenix is one of the best actors no one ever brings up. This guy is head and shoulders above so many of the shitty, generic leading men in movies today. I would be thrilled if he got this part.

My supposition would be that Marvel learned from the Norton thing, and would lock Joaquin up into a contract that would keep him from doing something similar even if he was so inclined.

Spo what about Marvel's Lovecraftian horror Shuma-Gorath? I love the idea. I know a lot of other people have been talking about it for a while, and I think Shuma's perfect because he's so otherworldly. He doesn't have human motivations or limitations. He is, for all intents and purposes, totally alien--and not in a "red-colored white guy from space" kind of way. Look at most of the Marvel villains who have been on film in the past ten years. Misguided businessmen. Envious soldiers. Vengeful schmucks (supernatural or mundane) Shuma-Gorath isn't really any those things, so he'd be a welcome change of pace.
