Here's the difference, though. People wanted Hogan as he was, and they got Hogan as he was. People begged for Stone Cold as a top guy, and they got Stone Cold as a top guy with no changes in character. Same for The Rock. And then there's Cena. People were begging for the Doctor of Thuganomics Cena as a top guy, but as soon as he got to a top spot, his character was dropped and he turned into a generic superhero and later a fake Marine. They took the guy the fans wanted and stripped away everything they liked about him in the first place. Then they do what they do now, which is outright ignoring the fans altogether and just pushing whoever the hell they want, which is absurd from a business standpoint. Typically you would try and feature the guys your paying audience is begging for. Not Vince McMahon, damn it! You're going to take Lashley, Sheamus, and Del Rio and you're going to like it! Oh, and screw all those guys you cheer loudest for. In fairness The Doctor of Thuganomics was too gimmicky to be a main event level persona. The demand was there and his crazy merch sells were the case even back then. While there was probably going to need to be some refinement, you don't chuck out everything that made people want to see someone as a top guy once they actually reach it. That's like if once he turned corporate Rock stopped speaking in third person, stopped with the eyebrow, and started wearing normal T-shirts. It'd have fallen flat on its ass. Granted, no chance of that happening with Reigns at the moment, given he doesn't have a gimmick outside of being a modern day X-Pac in refusing to let his old stable die. But at least DX had a gimmick, the stuff with Reigns has made it pretty abundantly clear that once you remove the pointless talk about justice and ignore the solo entrance, the Shield's gimmick was just in them having crazy good matches all the time.

See, as much as certain people don't see very much potential in Reigns, I personally see very little in Rollins.
He's a solid hand in the ring, but he's a charisma vacuum.
I've come around on Ambrose, he's found his persona over the last couple years, and Reigns is far better than 90% of the big guys they've tried to push over the years.
But there's nothing Rollins does that half a dozen guys in the midcard couldn't do better, and I really hope he fails his cash in, because I don't see him as a compelling draw with the belt.

He's a newer model John Cena minus what little charisma Cena has. Roman Reigns is shit. My opinion here, but this guy blows. There is absolutely no reason for me to like him and his matches are B O R I N G as hell to watch. He sucks on the mic too and has the charisma of a pile of mud. They need to abort this very bad idea before it gets any worse. I tried to like him but he's 10 times worse than Cena.

Because I'm a stupid smark who enjoys disliking popular things to build up my internet cred. Soon I'll have a popular alt lit style Twitter account.

I have nothing against Reigns and actually believe, in time, he can be a top star in wrestling.
What I resent is that when it looked like WWE was finally realizing that Bryan was the perfect hero for the current pop culture climate, it becomes evident that Reigns was pre-destined to be the next top guy. Thus, once again proving that this company doesn't get current pop culture (much to its own detriment). For a guy who claims to know so much about pop culture, Vince is showing that he has no clue. None, whatsoever.

How long until Roman's twitter has him calling people stupid smarks and haters?

Because he's taking a spot away from somebody more "worthy", like that guy from the indies. So tired of the "indy" argument. Dolph Ziggler is one of the most popular wrestlers on the internet, and he never set foot in an indy promotion. He's homegrown WWE through-and-through. That indy favoritism nonsense is a myth, and exists only as a crutch for topics just like this one. People latch onto entertaining guys who can wrestle, regardless of where they come from. The reason people are being so negative towards Roman Reigns has nothing to do with indies and everything to do with his booking as Lashley 2.0. That was more of a tongue in cheek comment. Notice how I didn't say which indy guy.

As much as I dislike Reigns, if they want to make him the guy they should stop with the bad jokes, bad catchphrases and he should stop treating his fist like a gun before he does the Superman Punch.

I say it time and again, I like reigns but his booking BLOWS
- he can't talk for shit - make him a silent badass - he looks like a beast but always a face in peril - have him beat people quickly ala Goldberg/Warrior Also have him keep the flack jacket for his entrance but remove it for the match, also calm down with the verbal fellatio THAT can annoy people

I'll give my standard answer in these threads and say, "I never did think he was any good. So I actually kind of like the singles push because now I can just fast forward instead of having to watch him to get to Ambrose or Rollins."

I was cautiously optimistic about his inevitable singles push around November to January, but besides the obvious shortcomings (limited in-ring, nonexistent promo ability), I have one major gripe. Roman has failed to evolved at all character-wise. Ambrose has fully reembraced the psycho personality he had prior to The Shield, Rollins has become very good in his role as The Authority's golden child, and Reigns...I can't really define what Reigns is. He still wears the combat vest/pants combo, he still comes out through the crowd, and his solo theme is a rearrangement of The Shield's theme. I get that Shield was over as all hell and I'd imagine that their line of thinking is "If we make Reigns a kind of one-man Shield, he'll get over like the unit did", but it bugs me because he just hasn't changed.

I see Reigns as a very agile worker, a guy who is one of the best "hot tags" in the industry. He has a cocky but smooth charisma about him, that "I'm kinda a pimp" thing (like his mic work with Rene where he was just smooth and relaxed on the mic), and who can do the comeback with fire as well as anyone.
Those are all HUGE positives, and things that you can't really teach.
What he isn't, at this point, is the solo act who has the complete match within his repertoire. He doesn't, or at least has never had to, do the face in peril act. He had Dean and Seth for that, the latter of whom does face in peril beautifully.
I don't hate him, and I'm fine with him being groomed to be a top guy. He can learn the parts that he doesn't have, and he has family that can help him learn it in a way that many can't.
I don't like, however, that they seem hell bent on "THIS is going to happen, this is WHEN it's going to happen, and this is HOW". That is not organic, that doesn't have the natural flow that his rise to popularity with The Shield had. He was the "non-talking killer" early on, then he developed, over time, that persona of being a smooth talker. Yes the last promo with him and Ambrose came off with him being less polished on the mic, but guess what, he WAS less polished.
He is young, he is talented, and he CAN be a main event guy. He just isn't there yet because he doesn't have the complete game that you need to have to be at that level.

I will have to say that I am a little annoyed by how he always seems to come out on top at the end of the shows involving him.
But at least it's slightly better than what happened to D-Bry(getting laid out again and again and again... and again...)

Somebody here said that everyone accepted Ryback before they killed him. Uh..no?
Does no one remember like half the forum yelling that Ryback 'wasn't ready', 'couldn't talk', 'shouldn't end CM Punk's reign' and so on?
I'm not trying to villify the dreaded "internet fan hivemind" but I sometimes feel like WWE built guys have no chance to get over as faces nowadays unless they're buried for years and years until they're seen as an underappreciated star or whatever.
