Why people be steady using BET as any sort of way to say "See, they've got their one network!"? BET doesn't even count, man. BET is owned by VIACOM.
Unfortunately it's the one network filled with black people that the most people are going to have access to...

I was wondering if I would enter this thread and see people post "diet racist" things here without any sense of irony and yep, there it is. Didn't even take half a page.
Wonderful.

To be serious, the most white people are gonna get out of non-whites saying/doing racist stuff is hurt feelings, which is VERY apparent in this thread. Outside of that, you can't be sitting here, getting mad over a damn video when on a daily basis non-whites have to worry about their safety and having to work twice as hard as y'all to only get a fraction of what y'all got. Simple as that. Don't get mad at us non-whites because at the end of the day, it all goes back to white Europeans. Man, if the only thing I got from racism was hurt feelings?! No long-standing societal consequences that put my life and career at risk during completely random and seemingly innocuous times? I'd be so ****ing HAPPY. I literally cannot process the amount of happiness I would have if I...say...didn't have to worry about not putting certain degrees or previous jobs on my resume because I don't want HR tipped off that I am black because if they know I'm black I probably won't get a callback before I even get an interview. Nothing trips me out more seeing people mad. Just ANGRY that nah, people technically can't be racist towards you. Racially Prejudiced? Okay and even that's riddled with historical context and power imbalances. How are dudes not happy that nobody can be racist towards them is what I'm asking...

In all seriousness I think one thing people need to realize that will help people to understand these issues is the fact that racism does not require active, cognizant malice to be racism. Maybe you're not attracted to people of a certain race, but hey, its not because you hate them! You're dingledong just doesn't go whoozeedoo for them, so how can it be racism?
Because attraction, like many many many many things in our culture, is socialized. Its really hard to accept that all of these things that seem so natural to you have been socialized into you, I get it. But who you are attracted to is based mostly on what you have been socialized to see as attractive. The only real exception being what gender(s) you are attracted to (thats another subject though). Thats why the beauty standard changes over the centuries. You want to believe that your attraction is instinctual but other than your reaction to seeing people you're attracted to its not, for the most part. There is some degree of instinctual attraction but none of it would have any relation at all to race. Especially since race is mostly a social construct and has very little basis in genetics if at all.
And what is the standard of beauty in our culture? White people. White beauty standards, features commonly found in white people, while features stereotyped as being common in people of color are often coded to not be attractive. Of course people of color just like white people come in a wide variety of features, not to mention personalities. There's also something to be said for the fact that we are socialized from birth (yes, even if we had progressive parenting, because TV, school, friends, ect still exist) to not see people of color as individuals. Thats where the "all people of (race) look the same" effect comes from, not because they actually do. Let alone how it numbs your ability to be attracted to a person for color for their like... personality...
This is all racism imposed on everyone (even people of color towards other people of color) from birth by our culture. Its cultural racism and we all suffer from it. We may not feel active cognizant malice when we do or say or think things that are socialized into us by a racist culture but they do still COME FROM racism.
So is it your fault? Eh, yes and no. Lets put it this way, it wasn't your fault up until this point, but it is NOW. Because socialization is an ongoing process and once you are aware of your own socialization you are partially responsible for it and you can work to change it. Its a process but its not an impossible one. As weird as it may sound to many of you ever since I became of my own racist socialization I have legitimately seen a change in the way I see people of color. Just as an example that might be relatable to this board I no longer find every Japanese wrestler who doesn't have some kind of unique look interchangeable. I can identify each one individually. And yes being aware of my own socialization has changed the way my attraction functions. Its changed the way I view women in general really, since I'm attempting to change my perspectives from a feminist perspective as well as an anti-racist one.
Alright I better stop myself here for now, one subject at a time. Also as much as I want to touch on it I don't really think that as a white person the topic of "why person of color on white person prejudice is not racism" is a topic I can cover super effectively.

I'm one of the whitest white dudes that's ever been white (Seriously, I have Irish/Scottish/German ancestry.. pigment, not so much); and honestly if someone was to call me a white slur, I'd probably laugh. I mean: Cracker? Honkey? Those are just funny. Especially when you consider even white slurs put them in a position of power. "Cracker" comes from the slave driver cracking the whip, "honkey" comes from the olden days when rich white folks would honk their car horn for whatever service they may need, et cetera.

Ugh, how about just don't be a douchebag to people regardless of their race? You WOULD think that! Seriously, though, it reminds me of whenever equality comes up, someone comes back with "then you should be able to hit girls because equal treatment", and my answer is always, no, you shouldn't hit people in general.

Anyway, I do like that subversive forms of racism are getting increased scrutiny as time goes on. It always bugs me to see people talk about the south like the Mason-Dixon Line is a magic barrier put up by sorcerers and that bigotry vanishes. Definitely a rude awakening for the sheltered and naive once they are faced with the realities of racism being a global problem. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am a trans person who was born and raised in Pittsburgh, but currently lives in Atlanta. In the past six years, I've been treated far better here than I ever was back home. Hell, that "redneck with a rebel flag, 'the South will rise again'" stereotype is a way of life in my hometown. I know people from NEW f***ING HAMPSHIRE with that attitude. This dude I knew had a rebel flag in his dorm room and took on this whole redneck aesthetic in general. He had this whole obfuscating goofy irony about it so I was never sure how serious he was... but I know plenty of people up here with some degree of that kind of attitude. At least people who are actually from south of the Maxon-Dixon KIND Of have the excuse of some sort of cultural heritage/pride to it even if the source of that is beyond questionable. What excuse does a northerner POSSIBLY have for that other than overt racism? I wish I had taken racism more seriously back then so I would have confronted him and seen how he could possibly justify it. Oh god... I just realized that kid recently told me that he's going to be a cop... Luckily its going to be in a small mostly white town but... god. I'm worried now. But yeah, in short there's plenty of northern bigotry and I think a large part of that is because northerners can point to the southern redneck bigot as an example. Thats why I'm so lowkey suspicious when people get so involved in tearing down the Westboro Baptists and Don Sterlings of the world honestly. Cause I know they're the same people who will point to the WBC or Sterling or the KKK or something later and say "I'm not a bigot" because they've been taught that only extreme overt bigots like them is actually bigotry. Its so easy to clear your conscious that way and its toxic as hell. Uppermiddleclass white liberals can be some of the worst when it comes to that kind of diet bigotry the video's talking about. Like they're not going to scream the n word at people but they'll have those subtly bigoted mindsets whilest pretending to want the best for oppressed people. "Oh I totally voted in favor of gay marriage! What? Homeless LGBT youth? Thats not an issue I've heard about on MSNBC, sorry :/ . Also what does the T Stand for again?" I used to be one of those types sort of, if only because my mom absolutely is and I was raised by her.

What irks me is the term "reverse racism." No. There is no such thing. There is racism. The reverse of having something is NOT having something. Including, in this instance a belief structure. Woman #1: "I'm pregnant" Woman #2: "I'm not pregnant" Woman #3: "I'm reverse pregnant" So... you prefer your women with an Ovipositor? Dude, I think she was a jewel wasp. I say we put an end to racists for good! And I say we start with the most strange and different. ... Yes but how do we lure you from the wilds of Canatia?

Reminds me of Doug Stanhope talking about his black friend saying he doesn't understand racism because he's white, "No, you don't understand racism because you're not white. I hear the shit they say when you leave the room. They don't hold back on my account".

I AM NOT FUNNY AND TAKE MY OVERLONG SOCIAL JUSTICE RANTS VERY SERIOUSLY (in case this gets lost in text doesn't translate tone traslation, this is self aware humor) Tribalism. I.e. "They are not us, they are other. Therefor they are bad." It is, unfortunately, a component of human psychology. Ignore all other elements. The ability, the desire to create lines, categories, definitions to make out judgements, our decisions easier is a fundamental underpinning of... us. Our brain simply finds the same, the similar to be comforting. To be preferred. The bias' and influences you prefer. This environment reinforces the same paths, routes. The same choices, and opinions. This is the reason there is the term "outside your comfort zone." Unless you actively try, to escape the inertia of the day to day experience, you will remain in that state. Because it is less taxing, less demanding. The comedy is that advocates for social justice can undermine themselves because they are behaving in the same way as the people they decry. By rejecting and showing hostility towards that which is different it ultimately defeats the mission statement of inclusivity. No one wants to think critically. It's hard. It hurts. It forces you to re-evaluate yourself. To redraw the maps you had set up of the world. To admit that, perhaps stasis is only a state you can find when dead.
