This was in the nebulous period where a ton of guys had cartoony 'other job' gimmicks. Seems pretty clear it was designed to get over with the kids. I do like his facepaint.
Interesting hearing JR/Gorilla in tandem. I had forgotten that.

Something I never realized before today - Phantasio debuted (and disappeared) in July 1995. Doink's last televised match was in September of that year. Have to wonder if they were prepping Phantasio to replace Doink, who they were winding down on and about to retire the character - or, perhaps, he was intended to work with Doink when the concept was created. A magician and a clown? Instant team or feud. Hell, could have had Harvey Whippleman as their manager, the Ringleader.

Now that's what I wish the WWE would put on the Network. Episodes of Wrestling Challenge and Superstars from the mid 90s. So many odd gimmicks tried out there. This one was particularly strange.

While I think there are some obvious limits to the gimmick, I think they could have done more with this.

While I think there are some obvious limits to the gimmick, I think they could have done more with this. I remember reading an article about him as a heel in the USWA and he sounded much more awesome, working magic into his act, turning a handkerchief into a cane, hitting the opponent, then turning it back and putting it away when the ref looked.

That's so Memphis... And I love it!

Interesting to think of a possibility with Doink. A match between those two would basically be throwaway. It almost seems like something Russo would book, if it were like a match for control of a prop or something. A tag team would basically be face versions of Well Dunn, jobbers with gimmicks. But for the time period it would've worked and made some sense. Doink was pretty much done on TV and the house show circuit around early 1995 though the History of WWE results show matches as late as 1995/early 1996. I guess a no show or injury occurred and they needed a quick replacement and if it were Steve Lombardi, it was already a guy under contract, already backstage.

Yeah he was somewhat of a big deal here in Memphis from 1994 on, as Spellbinder. Mostly just as a mid carder, he rarely feuded with Lawler, usually the #2 guy, the Brian Christophers or Bill Dundees of the world. He is still a "name" around here so that he still popped up in every promotion that has popped up since the end of the USWA in the late 90's.
